Best Chinese food in AZ. I know I'm from NY

The best Chinese-American Fusion restaurant in the town. Price is also affordable! Went there A LOT with my coworkers.

My first few experiences with this establishment were mediocre. This Sunday, I decided to give it one last go because I was in a mood for Chinese food and this place is close-by as well as constantly mentioned amongst people in my circle. Placed a take-out order for Beef Egg Foo Young, Salt & Pepper Calamari, Pepper Scallops & Prawns, and their Chow Fun. Did not notice it while there paying and picking up but came home to find that sauce from one of the dishes just completely leaked ALL OVER. The entire bottom of the bag was flooded. Just an entire mess to unpack. The clean-up itself already made me to lose my appetite or desire to eat. How is it NOT logical or sensible to use proper to-go containers for saucier or soupy dishes??? This is just beyond me. Now let's get to the actual taste and quality of the food. The Salt and Pepper Calamari is one of the worst I've had. Heavier on the batter than most other restaurants offering the same or equivalent dish. This dish is typically prepared by a finishing stir-fry or sauté in which a mixture of onions, bell peppers, and jalapeños are chopped or finely sliced. This place opts to only do jalapeños which to me, isn't the problem. It's that they barely even put any effort into the stir-fry/sauté step. It tasted honestly like they deep fried the calamari and then just threw in freshly sliced jalapeños in at the end without any additional effort. The nerve too that they even list this dish as "spicy" on the menu. If you pick out the jalapeño slices and strictly consume the calamari, it has barely any flavor to it at all. Now onto the EFY, The egg is terribly overcooked. If I didn't know it was their EFY, I wouldn't have even been able to guess what it was. Another letdown and disappointment. I was not impressed by the other two dishes either. Though so many in central Phoenix consider this place top-notch for a Chinese restaurant, sadly IMO you can pick ANY hole in the wall spot in Mesa/Chandler and most likely you'll find equivalent quality and at a friendlier price range.

This place is great and everyone knows it. It is packed but they have a lot of tables and the service is excellent and quick.

We ordered to go so not sure about the atmosphere but they were very accommodating to my nut allergy. Portions are insane. We got the shrimp Kung Pao, potstickers, white ice, and chicken chow mein. We will be going back. Personally I would like the Kung pao more spicy but I ain't mad at the flavors. Delish!

Delightful service, delicious Chinese cuisine and sweet atmosphere.

We get the Salt and Pepper chicken as an appetizer. The Salt and Pepper Chicken was spot on, crispy, salty with the right amount of jalapenos. As for the rest, the food was adequate once we received it. Waited, waited waited and waited for our food. Called someone over. Apparently our waitress set our ticket down. Did not turn it in. We waited some more. Apologies that I did not feel sincere but no discount our other recompense. Not happy

Delicious food and from 12 noon to 3 pm they have a Lunch Special at an affordable price.

I love coming here! The staff are so nice and welcoming! The lunch specials last from 11-3PM and it’s such a good deal!

I’ve been coming to this restaurant since 2007 and it’s always been so amazing. The quality of food and service has always been top notch for Chinese food. I highly recommend checking out the restaurant It’s very LGBTAQ friendly and it’s located in the gayborhood.

One of the best Chinese food places in town, there's a reason they've been around so long. Quick lunches that are fantastic, and get you in and out in under an hour to get back to work. We order from here every Christmas morning to enjoy all day in our pjs on christmas. If you DO try to order on a holiday recommend calling early, they get slammed and phones ring off the hook!

Great mom and pop Chinese food like Los Angeles Chinese food yum

I did not like the experience at this restaurant. Waitress was rude and never once she came to refill my drinks, also the chicken on the orange chicken wasn’t good. Breaded chicken breast it’s not orange chicken. Super sweet sauce and the chicken was drawing on sauce. I’m sorry but for fine dinning was lacking a lot for a fine experience. I paid 40 $$$$ for the 3 lunch specials it was not good don’t even bother stopping by.

My go to order ..house chicken sauce on side, salt pepper shrimp, house fried rice, house lomein! Duck with buns is great too!

This was one of the first restaurants my fiancé took me to, and years later it remains a definite favorite. The service is top tier, the food is excellent - especially the portion sizes. Though their shrimp egg fu yung is my usual go-to, I recently discovered the lemon chicken and it is soooo good. It can get a bit crowded at times, but it's still good for casual dining or take-out.

First time in and I was a coming off a sinus infection so it probably wasn't the best time to get a real good meal as my nose was pouring like a faucet. I also altered my order to suit my condition. The wonton soup was great and I loaded it with chili paste. Got me a little cleared up but turned the faucet to max flow. I got the crispy Hong Kong style noodles. It wasn't for me but that is my fault. I wasn't really in the mood for seafood. I was way off my game. Fried rice looked good. I should have had some but I was once again failing miserably on this occasion. I will need to go back again as I have heard great things about this establishment. The service was great. They were picking up dirty plates and topping of sodas and water with efficiency of a well oiled machine. We were treated to a police search for a perp, alley and street were full of cops. I almost ran just to give them a little something to do. Looked like they weren't going to get their action in. Maybe I would get pepper sprayed and clear my sinuses?

My favorites are the orange chicken and Ma Po Tofu. Always quick and friendly service. Great prices for lunch specials too.

They’re good is so good! Portions are huge! I couldn’t recommend this place enough. We got the orange chicken and Mongolian beef with egg fried rice so so good!

I've been eating at China Chili for decades. I ate there before they moved to the current location, back before I retired, and before Sally, one of the owners, had her twins. My staff and I would eat lunch there at least once a week and several of my staff were from Beijing. That's not to say this isn't Americanized Chinese food, but my Chinese staff still loved it. After all these years, the food is the same. Consistently delicious. It's hard for me to tear myself away from the Orange Chicken, but everything I've ever tried has been delicious and it's always the same. I don't bother ordering Orange Chicken anywhere else, it's that good. If you order Orange Chicken or any of their other fried dishes to go, ask for the sauce on the side. If you order Singapore Noodles, ask them to make them spicy. You can specify how spicy. The Chicken Salad is awesome, especially on a hot day. If you're anywhere near downtown Phoenix, do yourself a favor. Stop at China Chili for lunch or dinner. I promise you won't be disappointed.

We love the Chinese food at this location. They have a ton of options and the food is always delicious. They do both take out and dine in and everything feels very authentic. The service is incredible. The staff are always super attentive to your needs. I always enjoy coming here. Food can be pricey but it’s definitely worth it so we don’t mind it especially be size portion sizes are huge. The only downside is there’s limited parking up front and in the back so it can be full at times and you have to park on the street or lot next door. Overall, my favorite Chinese food spot downtown. The fried rice, Mongolian beef, chow mein and crab puffs are some of our favorite dishes. The wonton soup is also great, especially for take out if you’re ever under the weather. Highly recommend this location.

Server was super rude and kinda racist towards me! If I’m asking you a simple question, don’t give me attitude. I’d probably never come back here because of this treatment.

We have been multiple times. They are always very accommodating and the food is delicious. We have had several different entrees and always been pleased.

Great restaurant for ordering a lot with a big group and sharing with the revolving lazy Susan thing in the middle of the tables. Every single dish we ordered was great. Scallops, shrimp, chicken in multiple modes of prep. Very attentive service. This place is very popular for all the right reasons.

Old school Chinese local gem that has been part of the valley for a long time. Fresh, fantastic and affordable! No frills kind of place.

If you only hVe 30 minutes for lunch and get back to work on time, then look no further than China Chili! Entree comes with soup of the day. Drinks come out quickly, and almost after the first couple sips of your beverage, your food arrives hot and ready! Interior and exterior couple use some updating, but this is a great place to eat!

It was my first time here and it was absolutely amazing! As soon as we walked in, we got seated and our drinks were served right away. The service was amazing. The atmosphere was clean and all of the servers attended to us not just one. The food was nice and warm when it came to us. It was pretty packed but we loved this restaurant! What a wonderful choice for lunch today with my father. I googled “best authentic Chinese food in downtown Phoenix” and I’m sure glad that they recommended this place. I’ll be coming back. The service was really really great at the top of my list, and the food was prepared very well. It definitely was a Authentic and it arrived to our table in a flash!! I should’ve taken pictures of my dishes, but it smells so good I had to attack it quickly, so no pictures this time next time!! my dad ordered the chicken chop Suey with shrimp and I ordered the orange chicken! This place was 10/10 from the service to the food and portion sizes being served. I took my daughter here because she wanted shrimp chow mein little did I know that this place would become one of my favorites. I ordered the orange chicken and I must say it’s been the best I’ve had in AZ as of now. Highly recommended! I will definitely be going back to try other dishes🤣❤️🔥

I have been coming here for 25 years now. From eating her with my grandmother as a child to bringing my own family here now. The place hasn't changed in that time. Still reliable, still delicious, still enjoyable.

One of my favorite places to eat

Loved all of it. Food so fresh and delicious. We had the 2-person meal. $20 per person. So much food! Very good. Wish we had a China Chili where we live.

Friendly atmosphere, very clean & food was served in a timely manner. Good amount of food. Picture shows Chicken Chow Mein & Beef Egg Foo Young . Both meats were melt in your mouth consistency! I've been to restaurants where the chicken was tough and beef like leather... Not Here! Prices are comparable to today's rates.

Our group goes to China Chili’s every year to celebrate the Chinese New Year. We love the big lazy susan in the middle of the table. Our group loves sampling all the different dishes that everyone orders. We had about 20 in our group on our last visit to China chili and the staff looked after all of us quickly and efficiently.

Mixed Asian fare, some purists will like the Hong Kong style crispy noodle, or the beef with tomatoes, and others will like the more fusion dishes. Good value, Good eats.

This place at lunch is packed. I wanted to try it out. I ordered spicy garlic chicken. It is breaded and wasn't that good at all. The egg roll was also dismal and the soup wasn't traditional egg flower. I will try it 1 more time because of the friends who insisted it was good.

I would suggest changing the fried rice. When served it was just white rice with soy sauce. Those of us who crave fried rice know the difference.

When they make an error on your order, the just take the jalapeno off and it's still pretty hot. Maybe you could remake the dish like I ordered?

Excellent service but the food… YIKES. This was a total miss for me - the food was absolutely terrible, and almost inedible. I ate some of it but felt nauseous. There’s either great Chinese or there is terrible Chinese. Coming from NYC where they know how to do it right: this was awful. No need to return ever. Service was great, which makes this even more painful because sure I’d love to come back - but the food has to be the star of the experience, and in this case, it’s not even a supporting role. Will avoid.

I recently went for dinner with some friends. I had not been to this place in probably 20 years and it still basically seems the same. The food is good American Chinese food. I think the portion sizes and prices seemed decent. I had the Hong Kong style noodles and the old favorite is the walnut shrimp.

I have been a patron of China Chili's for several decades and have yet to be disappointed. Highly recommended for all occasions!

Good food but not great. It is a good place for family gatherings.

A few friends of ours meet yearly, and one of them recommended this place. I was hesitant with how busy it was, but we were beyond pleased with our experience. The servers were kind and attentive, and the food, the food was sooooo good. Everyone loved their selections for the 12 of us. The orange chicken, was the best I have ever had. It's the one time we had such a large group, and I was able to see and hear everyone. Really really looking forward to next time.

Hit or miss. Pretty standard American Chinese restaurant. Want to like this place because of the location but keep getting let down. Some dishes are decent and portions are large. Others are way off and don’t remotely represent authentic Chinese cuisine at all, though I wouldn’t expect that I guess. The Szechuan beef for example comes deep fried. I’ve lived in Sichuan and Sichuan beef is not deep fried. Eggplant is a bit soggy and the sauce always just a little too sweet, regardless of what you order. It’s alright if you’re ordering Cantonese style dishes or the standard American stuff like orange chicken, fried rice, beef and broccoli, etc., and have lower expectations. Pretty busy on weekends. At the end of the day, Central Phoenix struggles to bring in the good stuff and the East side continues to be where it’s at for Chinese food.

The food is great! A lot of different items on the menu. I got the Tangy Lemon Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Thai Noodles, and plain Lo Mein. All very tasty and it came out extremely fast. Service was nothing above ordinary. No server stood out but all my questions were answered promptly and my drink was never empty. It's also an older building and the interior could use an upgrade. But overall great choice in the downtown area.

This is definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants I’ve ever been to! It has a very authentic & elegant atmosphere & the service is amazing! We received our food quickly despite it being a lunch time rush hour. We also received large portions of food for a very reasonable price. All 3 of us ordered the orange chicken which was hands down the best orange chicken I’ve ever had! Our server even boxed up our left over food to go for us. I will come back next time we’re craving Chinese!

Always a favorite. Wish they were in Flagstaff, because the Chinese food in Flagstaff is terrible. Sally knows how to operate an amazing business. I think China Chili 🌶️ could move to tableside ordering and payment and considerably reduce staffing, saving the business about 45% on operating costs, pay the remainder staff about 50% more, reduce menu prices and move away from tipping... all while increasing profits by 25% and saving diners about 40% (reduced menu prices and no tipping), it would be a win for the diners and a win for the restaurant for sure. My favorite dish suggestions... salt and pepper chicken 🐔 with a side of orange sauce... sizzling rice soup... chow fun noodles (although I'd love to see bigger and chewier noodles). Their iced tea is the best in town for those who are aficionados. Bravo Sally, bravo.
