Came in for lunch. Didn't realize it sits on the golf course but service was excellent and you're sitting in what feels more like a traditional bed and breakfast vs a restaurant which adds to the charm. I really enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms.

Guiness chocolate cake. After dinner in New Paltz at another place we decided to be metropolitan and hop somewhere else for dessert. We arrived at Garvan's about 45 minutes before closing and asked if it would be ok to just have dessert. They welcomed us. We knew we wanted the Guiness Cake with cream cheese frosting right away and our waiter suggested a scoop and vanilla ice cream on the side, which was perfect. We got a Guiness on draught too. The place reminded me so much of the little pubs in Ireland and an older gentleman was playing folksy cover songs. We can't wait to come back for dinner because all the food passing us looked A-Maze-Ing.

Went here for the first time today but definitely will be back. We got the stuffed mushroom appetizer, I got lamb stew, and my wife got the grilled cheese with truffle fries. All were delicious! Combine the great food with great service and the historic old house atmosphere and it's a win-win. Highly recommended!

My girlfriend shared Garvans with me and said she really wanted to try it. We are both glad that we did. There was ample parking and everyone that worked there was pretty nice. The food was outstanding. She had the scallops and I had the chicken mushroom penne. Both were extremely good and very flavorful. She decided on the Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee for dessert. She said that it was very delicious and it must have been because she tool the rest to go. Will definitely come back to try other menu options.

This place is what going to a good restaurant restaurant used to be. We had dinner there last night We had gone before and enjoyed it but the meal last night was exceptional. We had the salad special, a cheese plate and the stuffed chicken. Everything was truly amazing and the bill was very fair for the quality. With so many places being so mediocre, especially since Covid, Garvans really stands out as a cut above.

What a disappointing meal! The beet carpaccio salad was 4 slices of canned beets with some frisse. The “banh mi” sandwich should be re-labeled as short rib sandwich on soft bread with jarred sweet peppers. Always wanting to love this place, as it’s such a beautiful space. I wish the food and service were much better than it currently is.

Celiac Review: Food was labeled gluten free on the menu and let waiter know of the allergy. However still got glutened and had to leave in a hurry. Disappointing considering the restaurant is so nice. Response: I don’t think having celiac should bound a person to the maybe 1 option around. Restaurants successfully share a facility, proper training and a small separate prep area is not difficult to accommodate. Alternatively, just place on the menu instead of gluten free, “gluten friendly” which is the correct FDA terminology for correctly advertising something that is not safe to consume with the allergy if you know it is not.

Garvan’s is a New Paltz and Hudson River Valley gem! We just had dinner there last night for a dear friend’s bachelorette party- everyone absolutely loved the feeling of the whole experience! The location is tucked in off the beaten path, and the historic building it is a colonial charmer- built in 1759 —when the 13 colonies were still under British rule. The fact that this building’s foundation was laid before America was even established— is something uniquely special. The staff always greeted us warmly at the door and was welcoming. This place always feels like you are being invited into someone’s home- no pretentious culture here. Expect authentic warm and welcoming colonial atmosphere. Food was delicious everyone in our Bachelorette party loved their meals- and drinks equally. This place truly excels at memorable experiences and making you feel like you are an invited guest dining in their beautiful home. This is a family owned business- you can feel the care on menu items. They even have an entire vegetarian menu- they also have gluten free and dairy free menu options. Everyone left with a big smile on their face.

Had a recent group dinner here and the dinner was amazing. Servers were knowledgeable and friendly. Food was cooked to perfection. My only complaint is that the open bar drinks started late and service for it was very slow. They started the timer for open bar as of our dinner start time, but didn't charge us for it until later, nor did the first order get out in until later. So the start time should've been pushed back. Normally I would argue it, but didn't care to at the time, so I'm taking a star off for service. Other than that dinner was great.

Had the most disgusting experience just now I almost wanted to cry. My husband and I came up here for the weekend. We called to see if we can come in - their response is as long as it was before 6pm. We showed up at 5:50pm and my husband dropped me off first to see if we could get seated. The lady was so sweet and told us we could but it would be outside. I said perfect. Gave my husband a thumbs up and he went to go park. As I was waiting a young man with black hair and brown eyes came to ask us (all the people that were standing) if they were okay and then he looked at me and I said yes. He asked if I had a reservation and I told him the lady that was just there had a table for us. He said she was new and didn’t know anything and there is no seating. I questioned him again. And he said no there is no seating without reservation - I asked even tho the lady said it was okay and she was getting our seating together? He smiled and said no. I’ve been in the south - like Pensacola South and I remember feeling that racism like I felt then. I was so upset and waiting for my husband to walk in who is white to see what they would say. I was literally the only minority there. The lady came back as my husband walked in and she said “ we have your seat. The man said - “we aren’t doing that” to the lady and she stood there looking shocked. I’m disgusted and nauseated. At this treatment. Thank you for letting me know that I’m not good enough.

It pains me to write this review, as we've always enjoyed Garvan's. And I hope the owner can take my and others' criticisms and use them to improve the restaurant's current shortcomings. Based on past lunch experiences, I decided on Garvan's for my birthday dinner. When I found out there would be music that night in the pub section of the restaurant, I thought, "Perfect birthday present!" Resy showed availability for the pub, so my husband called around lunchtime and left a message for the restaurant to change us from the dining room to the pub that night. They never got back to us, which should have been my first clue. They don't check their messages. Upon arriving, we saw an Irish host (not Garvan) who was talking to a family waiting to be seated. It sounded like the family were walk-ins and were to be seated elsewhere but they wanted to be in the pub. The staffers accommodated them, pushing two tables together. The host came back to us and we gave him our names and mentioned we had called earlier in the day for pub seating. He had no clue what we were talking about, didn't attempt to verify the message we left, and told us sorry, he had just seated the last pub table. Just a shrug and no real apology. We were seated in the back dining room. Now for the food: My son enjoyed his gorgonzola burger, my stuffed chicken breast was very good, but my daughter did not like her burrata ravioli. My husband was disappointed with his duck, which featured four little slices of duck (two of which were end pieces) and a massive massive mound of mashed sweet potatoes to fill out the plate. Like, way more than a human would want to eat. It felt like we were getting ripped off. (Side note: His dinner was so lackluster that he was actually still hungry when we got home and had a bowl of cereal.) Unfortunately, I think Garvan's dinner menu has gotten away from what they do best: solid seafood entrees and delicious Irish fare. If I wanted OK pasta, I wouldn't go to an Irish restaurant for that. Dessert time: My husband couldn't eat anything since it was almost all dairy heavy, my son enjoyed the lemon polenta cake, my daughter thought the Guinness chocolate cake was too rich, and I found the Guinness creme brulee too bitter. Not sure if it was the Guinness not pairing up well with a custard dish or the sugar coating, which looked like it went well beyond the traditional carmelization. All told, the bill was $200+ with tip. And an FYI, you can't hear any of the music from that back dining room, which was a huge disappointment since the music was a big draw for us. Service: Our waiter did disappear for long periods of time but was very friendly. Sadly, I think our love affair with Garvan's is over. Until they can right this ship, anyway. If you do go, consider lunch instead. At least you can get fish and chips or something reliable. 1/30/24 Edited to add: No call, as mentioned in the establishment's response.

So good. We had our dinner here last night with the new year menu. We had a high expectation here because of the high ratings. When I arrived at this restaurant, in the middle of a mountain and I was like, wow, this is amazing! (I even suspected I drove the wrong way lol) The food was amazing, the scallops were the best, we enjoyed it so much. They put thick bacon, which was very crispy, and it was such a match! I wish I could have 6 scallops instead of 4 haha! So delicious! The short rib, oh my god, so big and so tender. Biggest ever I saw in a restaurant plate. Not only us, my 2 year old enjoyed it too! Look at all other restaurants they served you one or two small short ribs, this is huge one! The service, again, so warm and so good! I think he is the owner, tall and nice guy, friendly. All other servers, happy, nice and say hi to my kid. Our server is excellent. We had a wonderful tonight. There was even a guitarist playing “Wonderful tonight”. 😊 Overall, I don’t usually leave comment but I cannot help myself write down this tonight at 3 am. (Maybe too much wine lol) I think majority people here are regulars and/or locals, another way to show how fantastic it is. I wish I could come back in one day to have regular menu and try their duck breast! I believe it will be so good too. Thanks a lot and very good ending of 2023.

Well let me see. I was expecting a lot more. We'll start with the appetizer. Got a cheese board. came with asiago cheese in gongazola cheese, which I don't like. Couple pieces of bread, olives, few pickles it was okay. We also got the stuffed mushrooms , which were delicious. They were good .Then we each ordered soup. I got minestrone soup ,which was more just like a vegetable soup with a couple beans at it .My granddaughter got the potato leek soup. she liked it. we each ordered a salad. She ordered the beat salad. I ordered the Caesar salad. They were good, nicepresentation. This is where the disappointment comes in. I got the seafood Fra diablo. It's presented in a nice big bowl filled with linguine ,a few muscles, some incredibly small baby shrimp, I'm talking small. Check out the pictures. The sea scallops 2,are big, but they are breaded and fried , over fried. They were tough and chewy. A big disappointment. Then little baby calamari , whole, again breaded and overcooked. fried ,not adding to the flavor of the food at all so . I was very disappointed. my granddaughter on the other hand got the rainbow snapper with grilled potatoes and leak. She really like the grilled snapper. It was a little overcooked but she still ate it and she like the potatoes and she also ordered herself a dessert. The lemon polenta cake with lemon curd and whipped cream ,she really enjoyed it. I was disappointed. I heard a lot of praise about this place and I was expecting a gastric orgasm which I did not get. Maybe they should stick to the Irish food. Leave the Italian food to the Italians. Just saying. The atmosphere was quaint and charming. Several named rooms with 5 tables made the experience more enjoyable. Our waiter did a great job and was very helpful.

Love Garvan’s! Have been going for years for special occasions as well as casual evenings out. Their whole menu is diverse, with a wink toward their Irish owner. I admit to being in a rut ordering their fall-off-the-bone ribs most of the time, though their salads, pastas, thick pork chop, and seafood preparations can’t be missed. My husband and I enjoy sitting in their rustic bar, though the multiple rooms in the charming, centuries-old house, with porches, gardens, and tree-shaded lawn offer many beautiful seating options. Indeed, it is a popular venue for smaller weddings. Garvan's offers lovely craft cocktails, their Smokey Breakfast Manhattan being my favorite. Garvan and his wife are from Ireland, and bring with them Irish traditions and culture. In fact, their on-tap Guinness is poured to certified Guinness standards. I never knew there was such a thing, but surprisingly, there is, and it makes a difference. Their Guinness pour is the only Guinness I’ve ever even liked! The bartenders and waitstaff are all personable and well-trained. Garvin himself is a charming, gracious, kind, and diligent host. His wife bakes on premise, and her baking specialties grace not only the dessert menu (it has some staples - try banofee pudding - and varies) but the delicious and authenticity Irish soda bread offered at dinner. You can also order her baked goods in advance to bring home. Make reservations if you want to be guaranteed a seat.

We started with drinks - Old Fashioneds were very tasty and worth every penny. Irish soda bread was brought out afterwards. We ordered sliders for appetizers and they were an excellent choice. For the mains, one ordered the duck breast and the rest ordered the short rib. Excellent wine selection, so we got a bottle for the table. Dessert was the house special banoffee cake and the Guinness chocolate cake. 100% recommended! We were told about Garvan's by a friend, we're glad we came, and we'll continue to recommend it. Food was good, pasta was better than the slider appetizers. The server was good but service was a little slow

Nice place, good food, very friendly. You can bring a dog if you sit on their patio, which has heaters.

We absolutely love Garvans, and more specifically having dinner at the bar. Super friendly staff that really go out of their way to give you a personal experience, and amazing food and atmosphere.

My wife and I stopped in at this restaurant on the way back from our vacation for our anniversary. We were greeted by a tall gentleman at front door who was very cheerful and a very nice guy. We did not have a reservation and the restaurant was very busy on a Tuesday night. He was able to squeeze us in and upon hearing it was our anniversary, he was hospitable enough to send us Champagne as a toast to us. Very nice touch. We had the lamb stew and the short rib. Both were hands down the best I have ever had. The word "incredible" falls short of describing how good it truly was. The Guinness crème brulee is something you shouldn't leave without trying s well. Great atmosphere, great people, even better food!

Food is top-notch here. It was a little bit more expensive but I feel it was worth it. Staff is nice and friendly. Will visit again!

Service personnel were quick, competent, and friendly. The food is okay. The various dishes we had were as low as a 2 and as high as a 4. The restaurant is in an old two story home. Some tables are in second floor bedrooms which to me feels odd. Not like going out to a restaurant. If something is missing or you drop a fork, or whatever the case may be, you have to wait for a server to come upstairs. There’s no one to just motion to call over. Obviously this is very subjective but I wasn’t a fan of the look and feel of eating in an old house. We had small fruit flies buzzing around us. Some other people might love it. But the food was not anything special and the price was decently expensive. Not very expensive, but definitely on the pricier side. I guess I just didn’t see the value of it. On the other hand New Paltz doesn’t have the variety and competition of areas in NYC, Long Island, or southern Westchester. So I can see how it might have the high rating that it does.
