Jeff and I love to dine at Gautreau’s. It is an Uptown favorite of our since moving to New Orleans from Atlanta in 2008. The restaurant just keeps getting better and better. The staff is on top of things, the food is well prepared and plated, and the drinks delicious. We always feel part of the Gautreau’s “family.”

Quaint restaurant tucked in a residential area. Service was great and food was good but not as good as I had hoped/expected. Scallops had too much sauce. Confit was tender and delicious. Steak was good but a little bland. Foie gras was not as rich as expected and served with beignets which was a little odd.

Had a wonderful dinner here the other night. For entrées, we had the wagyu steak and the Ossobuco lamb with a chimichurri sauce; both were absolutely delicious. For dessert, we had the banana split, which was also incredible. I would highly recommend this establishment if you are looking for quality food. My only negative would be that the room on the first floor is a little too tight with tables, but that aside, I will most definitely come back again.

Didn’t think this grande dame of uptown culinary excellence could get any better, but the menu under this new ownership is phenomenal. Plus the service was great (wish I could remember the name of our waiter). I’ve had a lot of trout in my time, and the trout dish they have is in my top three. Really all the fish options we got were great. Foie gras app was also delish. Make reservations early!

The staff here is attentive and gracious. Dwayne, our waiter, was a delight and helpful with descriptions and recommendations. This lovely, elegant restaurant was full (mostly local , uptown residents) the evening we dined with good friends. The noise level grew as tables filled up and diminished our enjoyment of conversations without raising our voices. The chef certainly offered unusual plates . Horseradish Cervich was a bit fishy but good. The scallops were done perfectly with delicata squash rings filled with lovely smoked boudin sausage and topped with (unfortunately) chicken liver 'mousse'. Coffee was bitter and desserts good.

Very disappointed. The bread and butter was the the best thing. Fois Gras, shrimp, soup: ALL overly salted. My scallops tasted like metal and were bitter. I couldn’t even finish it. I WILL say the hostess was very kind. Seriously, I feel like I need a Big Mac combo to cleanse my palette right now and you KNOW how salty that is.Will not be back.

You would not know this is a restaurant. No sign at all. Uber driver wasn't sure and we circled the block a few times. It's basically dining on first floor of a house in a neighborhood. Try the chicken in juice. Sounds simple but it was one of the best bites I had in NOLA

Long time patron so it hurts to write about another local restaurant going down.... We went the other night, as we do 2-3 times a year, for a special occasion - birthday - dinner. BUT, this time, we could hear the noise from inside a house and 1/2 away! Yes, looks like theyve started catering more to tourists and and parties vs locals... It was so loud that the table next to us - mr mardi gras JR, another local, kept hitting his hand on the table to try and get some attention and quiet the place down - to no avail. The wait staff were a bit in the weeds until about 2130 when it emptied out a bit - 2.5hours into our stay! Our table of 4 could barely hear ourselves and in between all the other folks taking pictures and moving around, it was obnoxious. We even called the next day to discuss the matter and while the hostess said Patrick would give us a call to discuss, we've not heard back from anyone. Odd also, we made our reservation through OpenTable. Well, when just about an hour had passed since our apps were finished and the table cleared and our entrees had not arrived, we inquired. 7 minutes we were told. Sure enough, 10 minutes later and almost an hour after the apps, the food arrived. BUT, heres the weird part, the next day when we went to leave a review on OpenTable, we saw the resturant had marked us as a no show which cancelled our spot on OpenTable - which then made us not get an option to respond to OT for a Review - a First!! The reservation was cancelled at just about the same time we inquired as to when our food was coming out. Shady of the restaurant to mark us that way as to not get a review - so were leaving it here. The food was good - but - the apps, at least mine, was not hot. It was cooked properly - the duck had a nice crisp on it, so i know it was done right, just not hot. Being a special dinner i didnt say anything as to spoil the occasion. The table was cleared and we drank our drinks. Then, tick tock, tick tock, we sat chatting all with empty glasses. we talked and talked and finally i had to flag someone down and got a refill. But, i embarrassingly forgot to check my table mates, they all needed drinks too. Flagged the waiter and all good again - except no dinner. When the dinner finally arrived, my steak was cold. My wifes fish was hot though. So the kitchen timing or the wait staff timing was off!! Finally, time for dessert. It was no so late that i wanst in the mood and my behind hurt for sitting for so long - but it was my birthday. So i ordered a coffee and banana split. Coffee came, now its 9pm, and it was lukewarm - ugh! then the desserts came - now get this - my banana split plate was hot?!?! I give up here - what gives. One of the staff was nice and had offered to take my steak back so chef could warm it - but honestly - wed waited so long for it, and i did not want my table mates to not eat while my plate was warmed and i didnt jknow how long that would take, i passed. No apologies no nothing for such a rotten experience. They knew it too, im sure. And did NOTHING. Which makes it all the worse. Next time well be at Brigtsen's! Sorry, we loved this place. Guess the tourists will be happy - they wont know the difference and itll be a one off experience all the time....

We had a wonderful experience. The dining room is a bit loud but it didn't hinder our evening. I see a lot of reviews saying this place is for boomers. Well Friday night at 8pm there were quite a few tables with 30 somethings there having a great time. My only negative was the gentleman walking around visiting tables, not sure if he's owner or manager, but he kept putting his hand on my shoulder while he was chatting with us at our table. I'm from Nola so I'm used to the warm friendlies but please don't touch me if you don't know me. Overall we had a great meal and lovely night.

Great food, good ambience, older crowd around 40+ above age group. Griffon was our waiter & was great at his job. I was with my girlfriend for our first dinner date in New Orleans as we’ve never been & we ordered an Old Fashion/Paloma/ with food. Good strong Old Fashion but each one of my cups had chipped glass on the edge. I told the waiter & he said that drink was on the house, gave me another glass that was chipped as well, decided not to say anything. At end of dinner Owner (Patrick) was walking around & seemed friendly asked how we were doing. I told him about the cups & he said “yeah, that’s because I buy the cheapest glasses probably” like it was a joke. He said, “did you cut yourself?” I said almost & he asked if I already payed for my bill, (I had set cash inside bill fold with receipt already) he took a look at the $100 & more cash & kind of just dismissed it. Not truly a 5 star restaurant. Good food but could be better in several ways. Very very small bathrooms. Overall, ok experience. Payed about $160 including tip for total bill

I was treated to great tasting food and a fast functioning service that was attentive even with a full dining room. A friend and I ordered the soup, Asato ribs, Arepa dish, Red Lentil Huarache, and Tuna. Every dish was mind-blowing in flavor, and dessert was not any less spectacular. The service, as I said, was fast and attentive. Enough so to place silverware in left handed fashion for my left handed friend after the first course. My wife and I visited NOLA for our anniversary. I found Gautreau's after a Google search for "wedding anniversary restaurants". I booked a reservation in advance to ensure a table even though it was a Tuesday night. The restaurant is tucked back in a neighborhood so give yourself a little extra time if you ride the st charles st car to your dinner. We get there and there's 2 of maybe 15-20 tables(down stairs) with people. Our server was very nice. We both ordered the filled and we both loved it. The only complaint I have is the fingerling potatoes. I sure could have used more lol. The reality is, the portions were as expected for a proper diet. Very good food, very quaint, and we would go back if it were in town.

My husband and I travled to New Orleans for our 10 year anniversary. We found Gautreau's online from the New Orleans travel guide. We ate here on our first night in town. Arriving to the restaurant we weren't sure we were in the right place because there is no signage. We were seating within 10 mins of arriving, right at our reservation time. The waitstaff was very friendly except for one older lady that didn't speak or smile. But she did keep my water glass filled. My husband ordered the snapper and I had the lamb ribs. Everything was delicious. As we were waiting on dessert, the owner came over to greet us and sat down with us. We had a lovely conversation with him and he recommended the chocolate dessert. We had the chocolate cake which was very decadent and the apple tart which was amazing as well. As we were preparing to pay the server told us our desserts were covered by the owner. I really enjoy my experience here. Very small and intimate setting. Perfect for an anniversary meal!

Short story - If you are from out of town they don't want you. They cancelled our reservation within an hour of calling us to confirm, because they saw an out of town phone number. Service was grumpy. The first course was excellent, the salad was mediocre, the main dishes were "tired" at best, the dessert was okay. Long story - We traveled to New Orleans for a birthday trip for our son who was turning 11. We made reservations at Gautreau's to celebrate his birthday. I had the good fortune of regular business travel to New Orleans post Katrina nearly 15 years ago and enjoyed lots of amazing food, but never had the opportunity to dine at Gautreau's. I am guessing it was probably better a decade ago. I made reservations far in advance of our trip via Open Table for 8:30pm. On the day of our reservation, the restaurant called to confirm our reservation around 3pm and left a vmail. We were on a tour so I did not get chance to call back to confirm the reservation until 6pm. The woman on the phone surprisingly seemed to begrudgingly confirm my reservation. I later realized she had already cancelled the reservation on Open table around 4pm because I had not called back to confirm. When we arrived, the owner, who was pleasant, indicated that when they saw my cell number on the reservation (a Chicago area code) they determined it was not a reservation that would show up, so they cancelled it. He sort of apologized. It seemed that Gautreau's is far more focused on the neighborhood (repeat) customers and is not so interested in out of town guests. Fundamentally we did not feel welcomed at all. It took 45 minutes from our original reservation time for us to be seated at the table (mind you our reservation was for 8:30pm....) The service was not at all pleasant once seated. The staff seemed almost irritated to take our orders. Items that we ordered were never delivered. Fundamentally the food was overall okay, but not worthy of a food mecca like New Orleans. All of the awkwardness of the service and cancelled reservation aside, there are so many restaurants in New Orleans that are head and shoulders above this restaurant. Don't waste your time if you are from out of town.

My wife and I dine out frequently, and have the experience to judge restaurants. Geautreau’s is one of the best restaurants in town for food quality and for the type of service that we prefer. I personally rate it then best in town, as it is the type of restaurant that appeals most to me. On all our recent visits to Geautreau’s, our fish dishes were perfect. The fish was cooked to perfection with accompaniment that perfectly complemented the dishes. I think the food quality is what really makes this restaurant stand out. Service was friendly and attentive, yet unobtrusive. You won’t find a huge cast of service staff like at Commander’s. But their few waitstaff are very professional. They quietly and efficiently serve their customers. This is the kind of service that I really like. This is a small neighborhood gem that is frequented by locals but welcomes visitors. It is small, and is located in a residential area. As it is small, it can be very noisy. And I find the chairs to be uncomfortable. It’s not a casual place by any means. Guests typically dress nicely — I usually wear a sport coat. Make advance reservations. There are a few two-top tables that are not ideally located. Book early to avoid them.

My first time there and it is a real experience. Unlike anything in New Orleans. These are all locals and upper crust locals. Most are young families and friends that fill the restaurant. It is very noisy after 8 PM or so I couldn't hear a thing my wife either. So go early. I realize this is a traditional French restaurant where you have to ask in detail what to order. We ordered fish it was dry and very over done. My Lamb neck was fine and the pasta exceptional. However the Foie Graz was frozen pate not good I ate about half. the dessert was dry and disgusting I ate a few bites and left it. I would go back after 9 or at 5:30 eat fast before the crowd comes. I would recommend you order the chicken which seemed good on other plates. Because we eat all over the world we are used to asking people what to eat. The owner is very gracious and will help. We finally tried this uptown neighborhood restaurant and we loved it! Every dish was so flavorful and uniquely New Orleans; there was not even one misstep. The small dining room fills up fairly early, so book way ahead to be sure of a reservation. For the vegetarians in our group, there was a good selection and the entree of Green Garbanzo Beans Fritters with Lebnah was a big hit. Others in our group had Grouper (they loved it), Chicken (ditto) and I ordered a perfectly prepared Filet with Red Wine demi-glace that came with delicious potatoes and green beans. The service was attentive, friendly and helpful. The wine list was terrific and ranged in price from moderate to expensive. The vibe felt very local, very friendly. Gautreau's has earned a place on our permanent must-do list whenever we visit this great city.

This is not a place the wife and I would normally go to. It is way out of our price range for all but the most special of occasions. However, we were guests and they wanted to take us so we went. First, the service is extraordinary. I would rank the service as among the best I have had in 60+ years. No one touched the wine bottles, and our glasses were never empty. Heaven forbid if a bread crumb tarried on the table for more than a minute or so. The food was very tasty, but not mind blowing like you might imagine. The portions are not large, and while I did not leave hungry, I could have used another bite or two. Presentation equaled the level of service. Most folks were a little dressed up to eat here. We had not planned on fine dining so I went in my Exofficio travel duds which worked just fine although I felt a tad under dressed. Make sure you make a reservation. The restaurant does not have a sign out front. I was quite happy with my meal, but I would have just as happy if they had taken me someplace where I could have sucked some crawdad heads.

We returned to the restaurant after a number of years, and for the first time since chef Sue Zemanick departed to open her own Zasu. The room seemed the same, the manager and staff were all very friendly and helpful, but the meal seemed less well prepared and off balance compared to previous visits. The bass in my entree was not perfectly cooked, or maybe had been frozen, so the texture was off, and the sauce had too much vinegar for my taste. The small plate duck confit was less flavorful than expected, though the salad was excellent. The wine list is quite short and pricey. On the whole, it does not seem to be quite on its game at present.

We went back as it has been several years since we were here. It was Saturday evening but it was so loud that it made conversation for the two of us difficult and because of the loudness, others at larger tables were yelling to converse which further raised the decibel level. Service was very good, as were the appetizers. Entrees were not good with the grouper overcooked.

This is one of my top 3 restaurants in the city. I never had a bad dish at this place. I love the food, outstanding service, cozy atmosphere, and wine list. It's not a spur of the moment restaurants, because it's hard to get a reservation at times. Patrick, the owner, is always gracious and makes you feel at home.
