Excellent breakfast and service. Really nice atmosphere. One of the two best breakfast places in Rutland.

Maple Sugar & Vermont Spice Conveniently located on a major road with plenty of parking, Maple Sugar & Vermont Spice has a charming but dated exterior, though it seems to have renovated the roof with a fresh brown paint job. Inside, the décor feels similarly aged, with old wooden furniture that could use some updating—tables and chairs were notably wobbly. A significant portion of the building is dedicated more to a souvenir shop than a restaurant, including the entire basement. Following the waitress’s recommendation, I ordered a stack of four pancakes with their special cinnamon and maple sugar baked in, along with a coffee. While the service was prompt, the food itself was underwhelming and didn’t quite live up to the expectations.

What a wonderful experience & meal! The staff is super friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. We had gf folks in our group, and they loved the gf pancakes! We shared the Mendon Medley, essentially an egg mcmuffin, but much much better! And the pancakes were excellent!

This old sugar shack has been turned into a thriving restaurant, ice cream parlor, and souvenir shop. Set up now like an old diner, expect to be wowed by breakfast items featuring fresh Vermont maple syrup, and other local delicacies - which I think will likely kill you or at least contribute to diabetes; however, you will die happy and satisfied. The smells in the place are wonderful - fried and maple sugar - just good. They also make ice cream - the old way with rock salt - see above. They also sell loca souvenirs - foodstuffs made from local Vermont maple syrup, and other local items. This place is wonderful to behold and a great representation of what breakfast should look like, and it looks good!

If you're cruising through Vermont and your taste buds are screaming for a breakfast adventure, make a pit stop at Sugar & Spice! We came here with one mission: to devour their legendary pumpkin pancakes, and boy, did they deliver! Imagine fluffy, golden pancakes infused with the perfect hint of pumpkin spice, drenched in pure, liquid gold maple syrup. It's the breakfast dreams are made of! But wait, there's more! The staff here are nothing short of incredible. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and friendly banter. They made us feel right at home, like we were part of their pancake-loving family. So, if you're in Vermont and your stomach's rumbling for something amazing, head over to Sugar & Spice. Trust us, those pumpkin pancakes and the wonderful staff are worth every delicious bite!

My family and I visited Vermont this summer and we just HAD to have breakfast with the famous Vermont Maple Syrup. I had the buttermilk pancakes, our son had the chocolate chip pancakes, and my husband got the sampler with their signature pancakes. Our waitress was friendly and checked on us frequently. We went downstairs to the gift shop and bought a few things for souvenirs. 10/10 recommend

I'd give 3.5 stars if I could, but I can't. Ultimately, it's a breakfast place off the side of the road, and my expectations weren't totally high to begin with, but I wish it was a little better. It's pretty much just a diner, nothing is amazingly high quality or gourmet, but it's not unreasonably priced. They're selling a lot of typical gift shop style stuff, less handmade and/or locally sourced than I'd hope, but it's all fairly priced, so not much to complain about. The aesthetics of the place, the wood and rustic cabin style is very nice, but that's about all that I'm totally interested in. The employees were very nice, it definitely felt like the people working were happy to work there and help us. To sum it up, Vermont style imitation Cracker Barrel. (We did not get the pancakes)

I can’t share a review of the food because, well… we never got any. The wait was 30-45 min for a table; totally understandable on Father’s Day. However, this can’t be the only time this restaurant has experienced a busy day based on the huge size of its parking lot, and obvious popularity with the number of reviews here. I mention this because despite the wait not being a big deal, the wait for the food was an entirely different story. We had two parties on either side of us at the counter that were waiting on their orders when we were seated. In the 30+ minutes we were waiting for our own food, neither party received any of their food, nor did they receive any updates on when their food would arrive. At one point, someone next to me asked for a coffee refill, which he never received. The staff both inside and outside the kitchen were constantly arguing with each other, which made the wait less bearable. At one point, one of the waitresses was grabbing buttered toast with her bare hands and walking it back and forth down the counter to put it next to its assigned order. At another moment, one of the waitresses showed another waitresses a plate of food set to be served. The waitress looked at it in disappointment, knowing it wasn’t made well, and she shrugged and brought it out to the customer anyways. After waiting 30+ minutes and seeing food come out of the kitchen that looked rushed at best, we told our waitress to cancel our order and we walked out. None of the people who had been waiting before we got there got their food before we left. If we do end up trying this place another time, and we’re able to get food and have a better experience, I’ll update my review. But overall, really not interested in returning.

Not only was the food great but the staff there was so incredibly kind. They heard it was my daughter’s birthday and put candles in her waffle and sang to her and let her pick a stuffed animal from the gift shop. You can tell they really care about their patrons. They didn't follow my order request and got wrong stuff. The pancakes were good and not from a mix and we're very tasty. The coffee is not good! The gift shop has a lot to offer. Lots of parking. No dogs allowed not even out on patio and there are no picnic tables around either (so much for VT being a friendly dog state). Was it worth the trip, meh, not really. 10/30/23 UPDATE: I changed my review to two stars as it's been impossible to get a table last three times I visited. There's plenty of space in the restaurant but being told not enough staff. So the owners need to raise the pay and hire more people - and if that means higher prices on the menu - then be it. Right now the situation is creating more frustration than goodness.
