We were very pleased with our visit to MFA, and we have to go back now because we weren't able to experience it all in one visit! The moment we arrived, there was no wait to enter, and we were warmly greeted by The Marvelous Marcy who provided us with an abundance of information about the museum and was truly a delight to speak with. In all honesty, my fiancé wanted to be friends with Marcy, she was so cool! Entering the museum was breathtaking, from the regal decor to the remarkable masterpieces on the wall and dreamy courtyards outside, it was all incredibly aesthetically pleasing. The museum is chock-full of ancient art and culture, with descriptive educational information available regarding the roots of art history that was fascinating. There was even a room with live wood preservation taking place that I found so intriguing. In addition, the museum also has some local artists on display throughout the musuem as well that were very interesting, mixed in with the older art, paying homage to artists of all eras up until modern day. Needless to say, we were very fascinated and in awe around every turn. As far as parking goes, expect to pay (however we paid the meter parking and that may be a cheaper option than paying to park in the museum spots) to visit. Another option is to find street parking further away and walk, which would then be free. The food at the Cafe was delicious, we got a couple of sweet treats for a mid day pick me up and were very pleased with them. There were huge bean bags for the kids to play with while enjoying some food. The museum has ADA accessibility, there is definitely a ramp on the cafe side. ♿️ 10/10 highly recommend!

Definitely another gem of a museum here in St Pete! The art is beautifully displayed, and done in chronological order so it makes it nice if you're going with kids so they can see the progression. Very ancient pieces that were fascinating! Pieces that are 4,000 years old! They have meter parking or a small parking lot attached to their building that's $10 for the whole day. Nice if you're going to go walk around at the pier or downtown.

Absolutely love my hometown museum! A comprehensive mix of early historic artifacts to contemporary shows on rotation. The docents and curators here are phenomenal and have a firm grip on their individual subjects. It's not a huge museum but very easy to go through and view different secrion an a few days and discover new works all the time.

Attended MFA's Skyway opening. It was rather disappointing. MFA showed very poor taste in burying the art in the midst of their other collections. Where's Waldo is not a respectful game to play with serious artist's high quality works. It seems it would have been more respectful for MFA to just step away from doing Skyway if they are not seriously interested in this otherwise very prestigious program. In fairness, MFA has very limited space for an 'extra' showings. They don't have the extra rooms that the other participating museums are able to provide. The contrast of MFA's treatment of Skyway is quite obvious to anyone who has seen what the other museums have done to make space for their Skyway presentations. It seems the question of MFA's commitment (or not) to be part of Skyway deserves discussion at all levels of the MFA.

For Florida, it was better than I expected, some really nice pieces. Overall, the entrance fee seems a bit high, and then they ask you for more money at the same time as a “donation,” seems tacky. I’ll probably never go back, but it was a nice experience in St. Pete.

A beautiful structure containing a beautiful display of art. From Greek and Roman sculpture and classic European paintings to African textiles, ceremonial masks, and modern art installations, the museum is easily navigable and very enjoyable. We enjoyed watching the gentleman conserving a recently acquired gilt and painted wooden tabernacle used to house communion in the Catholic churches of Southern Europe. Not only was it fun watching him work, but listening to his description of the history of the piece, how conservation and restoration take place, and his personal history of where he came from and how he chose his profession was delightful. I would suggest 3+ hours to get the most of your visit and not be rushed. There is a coffee counter with pastries that my daughter enjoyed. There is also a gift shop. I wish they offered more refrigerator magnets and prints of the art work displayed in the museum. Worth multiple visits.

I don’t usually criticize regional museums, but I will in this case because it is horrendously overpriced. Entry costs $22, and it is not worth it. Collection highlights are: one Monet (one of the Parliament series which is viewable at 13 other museums, including the one in Atlanta), one Berthe Morisot, one (nice) Vigee-Lebrun, two Georgia O’Keefes (one of which was on loan), one decent Robert Henri portrait, and one small Greek bronze head. I go slowly at museums and it still took me only 40 minutes to do (I spent 11 hours at the Met, 6 hours at the MFA in Boston). The rest of the collection, while “comprehensive,” is pretty bad in terms of quality. I understand that the museum lost the core of its Impressionist collection 7 years ago as several paintings in long term loan were recalled and what remains is just not good. I wouldn’t mind if the price were $10, but $22 feels like a rip-off. Compared to the far superior Ringling Museum in Sarasota, which costs $25 and also includes a circus museum and beautiful grounds, this is not worth it. For further comparison, the major museums in NYC, Philadelphia and Boston cost $30.

Neutral Comments: Husband and I went around 10:30AM, so a little after they opened. It was a quiet morning, so didn’t think it’d be that busy and it wasn’t. There were a couple of people in the lobby/cafe area eating snacks. Positive Comments: Great area to be in, not too loud of a street, everything was lit up nicely, and the cafe was great. Negative Comments: 1. The price for tickets was $22. Every other art museum we’ve been to was $10-$15 along with first responder and educator discounts. They had discounts for “foreign educators” but not educators in general? A weird promotion in my opinion. 2. The “tickets” were stickers that you are to put on your shirt. This was not stated to us when we purchased them. We went into one area to look at their “featured” pieces, and a museum staff member asked us (I would say rather rudely) if we had tickets to be there. When we showed her the stickers, she condescendingly told us, “Well, you’re supposed to put them on your shirt so we know you paid to get in.” (Right, because the security guard at the door would’ve let us sneak in🙄). We put the stickers on regardless. But she proceeded to gripe to the security guard to “do his job”, to which he replied that he was there to make sure that guests don’t touch the art pieces. They spoke in hushed tones to one another on what their jobs were about, which ultimately didn’t align. Seems like the museum’s staff needs to have some sort of meeting on what they need to be doing. 3. The plaques were very small and hard to read, and me being hard of seeing, I had to have my husband point and read things off for me. When we were in the featured pieces area, my husband pointed out a bull in a painting. Apparently he got “too close” so the security guard warned him to step back two feet. We were already two feet from it so this just felt like the guard was upset that he got chewed out by the museum staff and took it out on us. We ultimately left this area. 4. The variety as I have mentioned before is not vast compared to The Cleveland Museum of Art or the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The pieces were separated by country, but there were areas where bean bags were spread out in large dark rooms where video arts were being projected. These were not promoted well nor visited by anyone we saw. It felt like a waste of space. They had some outdoor pieces but no plaques that truly dove into their stories. We were through the entire museum in 30 minutes. 5. The gift shop felt very slapdashed, almost like a last minute thought of a garage sale. We typically like getting a sticker or miniature art piece from each museum we visit, but we didn’t find anything that stood out. Not typically a negative reviewer, but this wasn’t worth the price or time.

I visit this museum at least once a year. In October, we attended an exhibition dedicated to works of organic watercolor. The announcement suggested exploring paintings and drawings from the MFA's permanent collection using water-based media like ink, gouache, and watercolor. To our surprise, one of the first exhibits was a painting done with acrylics. The exhibition space was limited, and the composition of the works seemed poorly thought out. Thankfully, the ticket included access to the regular exhibition. There, we enjoyed the culture and exhibits from the Renaissance era and earlier periods. Overall, I love this museum and will continue to visit.
