We had the pleasure of celebrating my wife's birthday at n/naka, and it was an extraordinary experience that surpassed our expectations in every way. Chef Niki Nakayama's culinary expertise and innovative approach to kaiseki cuisine shine through in each exquisite dish, showcasing her team's technical skill and artistic flair. The service was impeccable, with a seamless blend of attentiveness and discretion that made us feel truly special. The serene ambiance and meticulously curated atmosphere only added to the evening's enchantment. What struck us most, however, was the team's unwavering dedication to excellence and their passion for delivering an unforgettable dining experience. It's clear that Chef Nakayama and her team are masters of their craft, and we felt privileged to be able to experience their artistry firsthand. If you're seeking a world-class culinary experience that will leave a lasting impression, n/naka is an absolute must-visit destination. We extend our sincerest gratitude to Chef Nakayama and her exceptional team for making my wife's birthday dinner an unforgettable celebration.

It's not hyperbole to say that n/naka is one of the greatest dining experiences a person might ever hope to have, and without question, it's one of the most impressive restaurants in the world. To try and review it in this space does a disservice to Niki Nakayama, Carole Iida and the extraordinary staff, as well as anyone reading this who hasn't experienced it for themselves -- there are spoilers and I won't reveal/ruin them. Suffice it to say that calling n/naka 'a meal' is about as reductive as referring to the Sistine Chapel as 'a painting.' While the cost is well above what most would expect to pay for a typical dinner out, it only takes about thirty seconds to realize that this isn't typical...or just a dinner. I'd never been emotionally moved by food or by a dining experience until n/naka -- and I'm still reeling from it several days later. If you're looking at your bill at the end of the night and thinking about money, you've missed the point -- or maybe it's meant to hit you later. One anecdote to support the above: about halfway through our dinner, I was hit with a debilitating migraine that forced me to miss some of the meal. I was embarrassed and felt ashamed about this, but the restaurant was so kind and took the best care of me. I can't think of many other moments in my life when I felt as cared for. There's dedication to culinary craft, to the art of food service and hospitality, and to the tireless pursuit of perfection... and then there's n/naka, an establishment that, for a few hours of your life, might just convince you that true perfection does, in fact, exist.

it was obviously very good but we felt it was waaaaayy overpriced for what it is .... and tbh the food didn't blow us away - yes we went in with high expectations .... but when a restaurant plays at the pointy end it's to be expected. At these prices ($USD870 for 2 pax with 3 glasses of wine) I can't recommend it - save your $$ and go to Nobu ... now that's saying so thing about the prices 😜 however the staff were great.

One of the best meals in Los Angeles. All of the food was delicious, interesting, and wonderful to look at. I want the entire collection of tableware. Also, the service was special. I recently had the pleasure of experiencing an extraordinary dining journey at n/naka. First, this restaurant is EXTREMELY difficult to book - reservations are gone within seconds. Yes, you heard right, SECONDS after being released on Tock, but for good reasons! First, the attentive and knowledgeable staff at n/naka ensured that every detail of our dining experience was meticulously taken care of; you will not feel rushed. What truly sets n/naka apart is the inventive and unique interpretation of kaiseki-style culinary art. A perfect combination of plant-based dishes, seafood, and meat is arranged, so you are unlikely to suffer from diminishing returns of marginal utility. In other words, your more "heavy" dishes will likely be followed by a refreshing and light dish. The spices and ingredients are also in stark contrast to what's often used in Western cuisine. You are unlikely to have a similar experience compared to, for instance, Providence. The variety of dishes served was visually stunning and a testament to the chef's commitment to using the finest, freshest ingredients. Each plate told a story of culinary craftsmanship and dedication to perfection. Each dish was a revelation, pushing the boundaries of traditional Japanese cuisine while maintaining a deep respect for its roots. I have to say I am thoroughly impressed and will return in the future (if I am lucky enough to get another reservation ;).

One star for service, the other for presentation. Two empty stars - because of the taste. With most dishes - I was relieved that they were small so I don't have to endure another bite. The flavors and textures were not interesting or complex. Just a blast of Dashi and Miso. The last of the stars is empty because of one of the dishes they served to my wife mid meal, that was extremely lazy. Cut fruit with smoked gouda - nothing short of pathetic. I did not enjoy the wine and sake pairing - as there was no synergy between the drinks and the food. The atmosphere was completely sterile, and the lighting was fine tuned for taking images for social rather than enjoying the moment. This meal cost more than 800$ for two people. I had the regular menu, and my wife had the vegetarian menu. We both disliked 90% of the meal, and were barely tolerant to the other 10%. The presentation was amazing - and it makes sense why this Restaurant gets such rave reviews in a city where facades are more important than substance. Yes, the food is very instagramable. The service was also excellent. Our waiter was very tentative. I did not enjoy hearing his presentations to the other tables - because that spoiled all the surprises. when he came to our table - we already knew what he was going to say, as we heard him say it 30 seconds earlier to the table next to us. This is not his fault, this is the fault of the restaurant's prep strategy. If you live for instagram - this restaurant is for you. Me personally - I would avoid.

On Saturday evening we had a celebratory birthday dinner at n/naka. I was expecting a wonderful dinner, but it was truly above and beyond wonderful. Chef Niki is a master at her craft. Every course was outstanding. The presentation was artistic, beautiful and well thought out-it was exquisite. The food was absolutely delicious. The dishes were innovative, balanced, pleasing to the eye and the palate and left you with a sense of awe at how Chef prepared such awesome flavors that complemented each other. Not only has she put together an incredibly delicious menu, but the orchestration of the wait staff and service was impressive. Our waiter, Chan, was knowledgeable, charming, attentive and made our dining experience complete. There was a comfortable flow and balance to the evening. The restaurant is intimate, calming and welcoming. This is a reflection of Chef’s personality and attention to detail. She was gracious enough to come to our table at the end of our meal and thank us for coming. This was the ultimate dining experience. There are so many places in LA to have a great Kaiseki experience but N/Naka really stands out and is absolutely worth it. The restaurant sits inside a nondescript grey building on the corner of Overland and Lawler in Culver City. The interior environment is small but not cramped and is traditional Japanese modern. The narrow color pallete helps to make the colorful dishes really pop. The tasting menu offers 13 impeccably created courses. From sashimi to pasta to wagyu each one is beautifully plated, art in and of itself. Service is attentive but not overbearing and does a great job of making you feel comfortable. Many other restaurants go for a more stoic experience but N/Naka keeps it somehow fun and light. We opted for the wine and sake pairing and thought it was definitely worth it. It added another element to the tasting experience and was actually a decent value with the opportunity to try 9 different wine and sake. Overall a fantastic experience that definitely lived up to it's reputation. And don't forget there is valet parking in back!

It’s a very small space and it felt like he was there just for us. And the unique sake’s was really different and interesting. The easiest way to score a table is get a group of 6 together. Eating at n/naka was an experience unlikely anything I have encountered before. I've been dreaming about eating here since the documentary came out and once I did get the reservation, the hype built day by day. I had such high expectations coming here and was worried that they might not be met, however, days after I have eaten at n/naka I am still enraptured by the night that I dined there. Magical, mystical, comforting, tranquil, effervescent, and delicious are some of the words that I would describe both the food and the experience of dining at n/naka. The ambience, the impeccable service, and the flow of the entire night made dining at n/naka an adventure, the dishes a symphony. Not only are the ingredients high quality but one can taste the care and love that Chef Niki and all her staff puts into each dish. Highly highly recommend this experience if you get the chance. N/Naka is an atmosphere that truly envelopes one and nourishes the body as well as the soul. The service, attention to detail, and warmth of the team are truly world class. The refinement of flavours as well as the complexity of the dishes visually and from a gustatory perspective are refined in a way that gently invites one into the beauty and sheer deliciousness of each ingredient and dish. The entire team is truly spectacular, and we were very fortunate to have Emily as our presenter and host. Her encyclopedic knowledge and kindness in maximizing every bite was truly a game changer. The seasonal dish highlighting various elements indicative of the summer season was one of the most sensory rich experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The wine and sake pairing is a perfect complement to each dish and there is a really nice balance of different kinds of sake and wine. The piedrasassi Syrah with Wagyu as the lone red wine in the pairing was a perfect selection opting for flavor and elevating each piece of the dish with a tangible connection to the wine maker rather than a brand name. Herein lies the beauty of the experience, world class Kaiseki and service, but with the warmth of going to a family member’s house. N/Naka is emblematic of its Chef: simultaneously unassuming in being so inviting and kind, yet utterly transportive beyond the medium of taste. Chef Naka is an incredible chef, and an amazing person. Her talent and humility are ubiquitous in the food, the ethos of the restaurant, and the genuine care of the entire team. All of these elements create what is perhaps the finest restaurant in Los Angeles and southern California.

Not going to go course by course as stated many times the food is spectacular, with each course extremely well executed. The couple of things that really stood out: duck liver macaroon and dashi were above any other variations I have had in the past. Today after many attempts at getting a reservation, I was finally able to dine at n/naka, the only double Michelin star restaurant in LA. The restaurant is located in the west side of LA, on Overland Avenue, and sits inside a discrete non-labeled building. Inside is a cozy modern dining room featuring exactly 26 seats, among tables for 2, 4, or 6. The tables and chairs are custom and beautifully crafted, and an elegant display of wine and sake is prominently featured on an entrance wall. Upon being seated, at each table is a wooden placemat, a napkin, a hand towel, a pair of chopsticks, and an appetizer spoon. The current price per meal is $285/person, with an optional sake pairing at $150/person. Throughout the meal, I decided to focus on the food and the experience rather than writing down the details of each serving. We have been to many Japanese restaurants in California and n/naka is by far the best. It is open now for seating (as of June 16) so go there and give yourself time. Make a reservation and have the best time. They have a wonderful sake selection, you want it, they have it and a lot of it is served by the glass, they also have a fab wine selection. The food is to die for. Their OTSUKURI, traditional sashimi, is the best you will have. They have tasting menus that are amazing--some with 13 courses. Try their MIZUMONO, which is a Yellow Peach Mousse Castella Cake, Italian Meringue, White Peach Jelly, Yellow Plum Sorbet, and Sunflower Seeds--just OMG. Due to COVID, there is only take out available. The Ekiben Japan Tribute ($85pp) was the one that I scored. The food was all inspired by dishes found around Shinkansen train stations throughout Japan. Some menu item favorites: Salmon Shioyaki (Niigata) Kurobuta Katsu with Hatcho Miso (Nagoya) Bara Chirashi don (Osaka) Tamogoyaki To score a take out, they release these reservations at 10am/pst every Saturday. So you need to be quick! It took several weeks before I was able to get one. Maybe you will be lucky and get it sooner than me! After getting the reservation, you're emailed the confirmation and when you arrive, there is a check in table outside. It went smoothly and quickly. The food was amazing and there were instructions on how to reheat some of the items. It was fun trying to match the food items to the menu! Fish was fresh and perfect- I wanted more! Also, proceeds from the bento benefit RE: Her, a charitable organization for women-owned restaurants in Los Angeles, created by women who own restaurants in Los Angeles. Can't wait to come back when they reopen indoors!

I have probably watched Chef Nakayama's episode on Chef's Table way too many times and I admire her dedication and passion to her craft. This weekend I ordered the Valentine's Day Junbako this weekend and was blown away. The pick up was also very smooth, I showed up at my designated pick up time and was handed my order within a minute. I cannot wait for indoor service to return and to experience this place again!

Amazing NYE To-Go Box. Definitely recommended and I will be back once the restaurant opens up again for in-room dining.

My girlfriend and I really appreciate the decision the team at n/naka made to remain accessible in light of the current social distancing measures. The fixed menu they offer currently far exceeded our expectations for take-out food. A great opportunity to try a fixed menu at very agreeable price. We will definitely be back to visit in-person!

n/naka is a real wild ride. Takeout means you rely on a printout to try and identify each dish, whereas the in-person experience would probably include a little more clarity. Still, attempting to discern the individual pieces is fun. Most of those pieces work really well! You sometimes worry with this kind of bold, modern restaurant that you'll wind up hungry, loaded up on hype more than anything else. But n/naka delivers with the amount and variety of both food and flavors. One three-level box is a true journey for two people. The desserts rule.

The fascinating ambiance that breaks you to Korea. The smell of the grilled meat and also looks so good. You can't get enough of it. As well as the kimchi and other dishes. It was a great experience to dine in. I will surely visit this restaurant again and you should too. I am sure that you will love it!

I've had their Kaiseki box twice now for takeaway (their dining room isn't open due to covid) and each time the food was delicious and had a slightly different variety. It's a wonderful treat during these crazy times. Order via Tock and they sell out quickly.

This review is only for takeout service since my friends and I have never been able to score a reservation, and the restaurant is closed to in-person dining. There are a limited number of to-go slots made available on Saturday mornings and all get claimed within about a minute. I've managed to get 2 bento ($38) slots. The photo I uploaded includes a menu of included dishes. Everything was excellent, although the tempura lost some crispiness due to the 20-minute drive home.

Even in a global pandemic, Chef Nakayama does a superb job. Perhaps the best takeout from any Michelin star place in the whole city, and that doesn't count price. If you count price there's probably no Michelin star place in the whole state that comes anywhere close. I'm hungry now just writing this. Sadly, but good for n/naka, their take out boxes are just as popular as their dine-in in the pre-pandemic days. Which is to say almost impossible to get!

Thanks for offering the Kaiseki Jūbako - a light into this quarantine time. The piece of melting otoro instantly transported one into a transcendental realm. Then the culinary craftsmanship somehow locked the very gist of each meat in itself, be it wagyu, duck, lobster - or eggplant. Meantime the delicate and subtle tastes of truffle & liver sauce, of mustard, of sesame dressing, or of the deep smokiness permeating the fish, was unforgettable - or perhaps beyond words. And at the end, praise the strawberry (red bean) daifuku - didn’t know a daifuku has such potentiality! P.S. I have no idea how I managed to score one last Saturday. Best luck 🔔

Loved every minute, from the incredibly kind staff to the clean, artful presentation to the amazing flavors of the food. Chef Niki is a force. And the best part is she's so down to earth. I will be thinking about some of these dishes for months! Can't wait to come back.

I have been coming to this restaurant for years and every amazing thing that you have heard is true! One thing that doesn’t get talked about often enough is the amazing service that consistently accompanies every small detail of each meal served by Chef Niki and her team. Another thing I wanted to highlight is their amazing selection of sake- of course a restaurant featuring Japanese food will offer sake but n/naka has introduced me to some great ones I have not found anywhere else. Of course the food is fantastic and really hard to describe in words because it‘s not only delicious it’s also a work of art combined with a true labor of love. I guess my one attempt at describing some aspect of the food at n/naka would be the Abalone Pasta- I would like to go swimming in a pool completely filled with this abalone pasta and then eat my way out of it. And that’s only one of the many fantastic courses you will enjoy at n/naka!

This place was delicious. There's a reason why it's famous. Very affordable, pleasant atmosphere, and easy to book (just walked in). The kofte were awesome. Grape leaf rolls had a nice lemony flavor I've never experienced elsewhere. The spinach and cheese pastries were a bit overcooked however. I would definitely be going back.
