No frills Omakase for dinner.. and a nice lunch special. If you're looking for spicy tuna or teriyaki... look elsewhere since they don't serve those items. However, if you want some top quality sashimi & nigiri in a casual setting with sake & beer, Sasabune will hit the spot!

Decided to go for omakase sushi for the night and came to Sasabune Sushi which do ala carte, omakase (standard and premium) version. Sashimi was fresh and some tasted even fresher than the one I have in Japan which was amazing. The sweetness of the seafood was worth the amount paid.

The lunch omikase served was: Albacore sashimi; sushi bf, bf Toro, halibut, red snapper; oyster, mushroom scallop, mussel; sushi salmon, yellowtail, Bonito, scallop; amberjack, albacore, butterfish; crab handroll. I particularly like the salmon, both bluefin, amberjack, Bonito sushis and the albacore sashimi. Absolutely top notch fish. Was 115$. Cost can vary a bit depending what they served you. It's too expensive for 2018. There is no price on the menu, so when you receive your bill, you'll see charges of $20 or $25 for small sashimi, or $19 for hand roll. The food is fresh, but putting MP next to 90% of the item is theft!!! I wonder how much it's in 2023?? $40??

I love Omakase restaurants that make me feel excited waiting for the chef prepare the next course. Unfortunately this place didn't make the cut. Don't get me wrong. Most sushi was good and the fish was fresh, but nothing was truly exceptional. There were not any innovative flavor combinations between the ingredients that I haven't encountered before. More importantly, I didn't feel like the course was designed in a particular way to create a harmonious dining experience. For example, I find it odd that they don't include any starter or desserts in our course. The wait time between each course was also very long for no reason. Overall, it's an average experience for me.

I've had much better sushi at a typical department store/chain restaurant in Japan. I would give it a 3 but the actual dining experience was unpleasant. The nigiris were OK, except the shari (rice) was soaked with soy/sauce for some of them, to the point where the grains fell apart onto the little plastic plates. The tamago was totally disappointing. We went without a reservation. At the front, a waitress came and asked whether we had a reservation and when I said “we do not”, she started laughing. I said, "Does this mean that we can get a table or are you fully booked?" She said, "we are booked with reservations." As the reviews were good and we were visiting town, I decided to give it one more try and said: "if it makes a difference, we can eat fairly quickly." She responded by saying "Quickly? One hour?" to which we said, "OK". She then pointed to the sign at the front saying "We only do à la carte order. NO California Roll, NO Spicy Tuna Roll NO Teriyaki/Tempura. Please read this sign (see photo). Are you OK with this?" We said "Yes." Once seated at our table for 6, we quickly ordered sake, plum wine and beers and I asked for the menu. The waitress said "We don't have menus, only a list of sushi." I said "OK, can we please see that list of the fish that you had at the front entrance so that we can order the ones we want to eat?" She then pulls out “the list” from her apron pocket and asks us to write down how many we want to order beside each item, with a pen. This “list” has the name of the nigiri, the rolls and the price - isn’t this called…a “menu”? We were asked to order a minimum of 4 pieces per person, and we looked for choices for rolls for the kids. As we were looking at the menu, another waitress comes by and says to me "So do you have the order yet?". I told her we are still deciding. She huffs and says "Oh no! You don't have much time.". So we focused on ordering the rolls first, then once done, called the waitress and said "we can order the rolls first and we will mark up the nigiris shortly.” The waitress says, "No, you must order everything at once." I was getting a annoyed by this so I said "You told us we have an hour so we are trying to place the order as soon as we can, given the limited time. Do you want us to still order everything at once?" She mumbles something and scurries away. I guess that meant yes…? Once we decided, we called her back right away. The nigiris arrived within 5 minutes, but the rolls followed a good 30-40 minutes after. As I looked around the restaurant, I thought to myself – why did we push to dine here all to feel so unpleasant? But I should have known, that a restaurant that prints a big sign at the entrance saying "NO California Rolls! NO Tempura! (No this and that)...Seriously!" (again, refer to photo) is a 'wanna-be-high-end sushi establishment' that is in fact, unnecessarily pretentious and mediocre.

The sushi here is not fresh at all and no decent sushi place serves seared sushi. They claim to serve only traditional Japanese sushi so no California roll but I wonder what that cheese on the grilled mussel was. Cheese is not traditionally Japanese. Also it was much overpriced. Not worth the money for the quality of food. If you pay $150+ pp you expect decent sushi not this quality that any sushi restaurant can produce. I should have known that their quality can’t be good because they have too many locations and they even opened a Sasabune express. A good sushi place has just one location because a good sushi chef can only be in one place after all. And when you pay so much you should at least be served sushi on some proper plates not plastic plates.

Mixed feelings about this place . The Chef Menu is absolutely delicious , but the pricing is obscene . You basically pay per piece and you don’t know how much you spend . None of the waiters is able to tell you how much you spent. So depending on the night and what the chef cooks some plates can be $30 and others $7.. and you just see the bill at the end … bottom line is Food is amazing but the unknown pricing completely ruins the place

Look, the history here and far-reaching influence of the Nozawa/Sasabune brand is undeniable, and anybody who thinks they know US sushi should be visiting here at least once in their lives. But from a pure cost-value standpoint, this is an experience that has long been eclipsed by newer, more ambitious sushi restaurants. Sure, the warm rice and "square" nigiri shape are iconic. But too often that rice is soaked in ponzu or sweet soy sauce, and it is devoid of any vinegar or salt seasoning. The wasabi is a mix from a packet, not the fresh stuff. And the "omakase" sequence seems to change very little with the seasons. At a $150-200 price point, it's tough to make a case that this should be destination-worthy sushi for anybody aside from nostalgia-seekers.

In late 2018, the owner of Sasabune fired all the staff and the restaurant went downhill quickly. My review then was how could such a great place go down so quickly? Now, six months later I revisited Sasabune Beverly Hills and although there was a very sparse number of diners, Sasabune has almost returned to its former self. The food now, as it had been is delicious, our Sushi Master was courteous, engaging and very knowledgeable about what he served us. We ate at the counter where its Omakasi only and the prices have gone up since the change in management. But, for the quality of fish and the new very nice Sushi Master my wife and I agreed that Sasabune needs a second chance. They have been in the same strip mall for close to 7 or 8 years and the only restaurant that succeeded, it would be a shame to lose them and I believe your experience this time will be far better than that in between transition when management changed. They added a very creative offering of frozen Toro and baked butter fish. The tuna melts in your mouth, but don't eat the butterfish directly after or your teeth will scream at you. So, if you are like me and were disappointed by the shake up, try it again and you will notice a big change. Please help to keep Sasabune where they are. Its the best Sushi for miles..

I can't say I was completely stunned by the final bill when it arrived, but for the price that we were paying I definitely expected a lot more. We were on vacation in LA and in the mood for sushi. After reading positive reviews about Sasabune, we made a reservation and showed up as it opened for lunch on a Monday. Upon being seated we were asked whether it was our first visit and informed that lunch options were either: A) a Donburi special lunch set at $25; or B) an omakase meal at $90 to $110; or C) a "Japanese omakase" lunch at $120+. These were the only options. Even though I was expecting lower prices given the simple decor and street-side location as well as the fact that we were there for lunch, we decided to order two "Japanese" omakase sets, one regular "omakase" and two donburi lunch sets. To be honest the fish was fresh and of good quality, but the rice was quite warm and didn't hold together very well. Every piece would fall apart quickly unless one picked it up by hand and immediately consumed it in one bite without any attempt to dip it in soy sauce. Luckily some pieces came with nikiri already brushed on. The way the fish was cut was also messy. Some pieces were cut in irregular shapes and some were quite thick while others were too thin. Some pieces of sushi had the perfect ratio of rice to fish, but most had too much or too little rice. While I do not fault the quality of the seafood itself, I am quite disappointed with the way the individual pieces of fish were cut and nigiri sushi were formed. Especially for a restaurant with such high reviews that charges over $100 for lunch. Sasabune actually displays a sign that clearly states that it is not your run of the mill sushi roll takeout and does not serve California rolls or teriyaki. I would have liked to have had more lunch options as well. On the positive side, all the seafood tasted fresh. Service was pleasant enough, and the location/accessibility was a plus, with adequate parking on the street. I'm sure they're doing something right since I noticed some "regulars" during lunch hours as well (most people were having the simple donburi lunch set). While my expectations for sushi are arguably higher than most given that I've lived all over the world (including in Tokyo for seven years), I wasn't expecting the same standards as my favorite sushi establishments in Tokyo. Even relative to much cheaper sushi restaurants in cities such as Hong Kong, Taipei, Vancouver, or New York, Sasabune pales in comparison. The final lunch bill for three adults and two teens came to $470. For this price we could have enjoyed lunch at a top-rated sushi restaurant pretty much anywhere in the world. If this is one of the best that LA has to offer I am massively disappointed.

We had to grab an early dinner before going out, and rolled down Wilshire Blvd until we spotted this restaurant. Parking is . . . . challenging in the early evening. May that improves later. Was thrilled when I saw the sign by the door that said "No Spicy Tuna. No California Roll. TRUST ME." The fish was all quite good--had a variety of nigirizushi and makizushi, and all of it was good. On some of the dishes, I felt that the rice was too warm...they had just opened, but... Anyway, real sushi in a very sparsely decorated restaurant.

If you love sushi and especially love omakase then consider Sushi Sasabune. I’d never been till this week. It was recommended by a friend who’s eaten with them in several of their locations and iterations. If you’re looking for basics, “this is not the droid you’re looking for” there are plenty of sushi joints in the city that will feed that need. The restaurant is unassuming and plain. The star is the seafood. Sushi Sasabune delivered a series of little gems -each one outstanding and delightful. I normally take pictures of dinners and this one was so revelatory, I took just one photo-the second to last dish -which was followed by a delectable crab hand roll. Set aside some money, set aside your inhibitions, put yourself in their capable hands and settle in for a feast.

I went back to Sasabune after an absence of 12 years. Since then they have moved to fancier digs but the fish is still awesome. This time I had Omikase and let the chef do the thinking. Great call!

I used to love this place when it was on Sawtelle. Since their move to Wilshire, I have had mixed experience. They definitely have quality sushi though. I believe I got the chief's special all five of my visits. First three on Sawtelle and last...

I was introduced to this place by dear friends from Santa Monica, we had 4 omikasa that went amazing. Many portions cam seasoned, and they all seam to be the freshest and best sushi. The sake was very good as well. We loved it!!!

This restaurant downsized and moved to a location less than a mile from the previous. Get the sequence until your stomach says "stop" - but you will love every course. The sashimi first course is superb.

I walked into Sasabune on a whim after a recommendation from a friend and managed to get a seat at the bar in front of their master sushi chefs, despite the fact that the place was rammed on a Saturday night. I ordered in some...

I had Omakase for the first time here. Omakase simply means 'Trust the chef' or 'Leave it up to us'. This meant that rather than select our choice form the menu we would leave it to the chef to build the courses and the food...

I ate lunch at Sasabune on Monday, 13 May 2013. We had the Japanese Omakase and it was amazing! While I've loved sushi for many years, this had to be the freshest, most glorious I've ever had. It had the ONLY sea urchin I've ever...

Best sushi I ever had in the westside. even the service was excellent. If you are a true sushi fan who cares about the taste not the price, this is the place to go.

There are tons of sushi houses and bento box restaurants in LA. All over the place. But the truth is that most aren't really run by Japanese proprietors. And most don't serve truly Japanese food. The miso is the first surprise. My friend is Japanese,...
