Booked 8:30 ride on 8/29/24....staff was awesome and especially a shout out to our wrangler Syndey Smith! She was a breath of fresh air! She made the ride enjoyable....by interacting with everyone and making sure all of us were doing OK! Horses were well taken care of just an overall fun time. Would highly recommend!

Our family of 5 loved the 1hr trail ride and chuckwagon dinner in mid-August '24. Our kids - 6yrs, 9yrs, 11yrs - had never ridden horses before so we were nervous, but we read positive reviews from families with similar setups. Also called the Stables and they were very helpful, explaining that they would pony our 6yr old (i.e. the trail guide would hold her horse by a leash). The ride was fun, easy, scenic and safe; our guide was excellent! Glad we chose 1hr instead of 30min option...we could have kept going. The kids now love horses, two days later we even drove back to the Stables from our cabin in Custer just to pet the horses. The overall dinner was nice. Not the best steak or cobbler but the beans and potatoes were good; singers were talented but not that interesting for kids. But the open meadow setting with mountain peaks in the background was awesome. And we got to pet the wagon horses for a good while, which was the best part for us. Glad we did it, highly recommended especially for first-time riders!

I didn't ride here, just spent the night at the campsite. The stable appears organized. The tack and the stand boxes are in good condition. It's also nice to see that the horses have shade.

A great experience for my first time riders (ages 11 & 14). Horses were perfect and gentle. An hour ride was long enough. It is a walking trail ride, no major hills, no galloping but an easy ride through the black hills. Staff was wonderful as well. Highly recommend!!!

Very well behaved horses and beautiful surroundings during the ride. Very fun and kid friendly activity. The location next to the massive KOA makes for a very busy and very commercial experience though.

We truly enjoyed our trail ride, the dinner, and entertainment. Check-in was a breeze. The staff was super friendly and our guide, Bethany, did a great job. Our children had been asking to "ride horses" (aka trail ride) for quite a while, so this was a dream come true for them. The cost was totally worth the value of the experience and the memories we made are priceless. Thanks to Maysa for capturing our "happy trails" moments in beautiful photos. We would definitely do this again!

They matched us with our horses perfectly and they are well behaved. ( Even though mine liked to eat!). We opted for the hour and a half trail and thought the trails were beautiful. This was our first time riding a horse for most of our group. I am really glad we were able to go out in small groups. We were kind of hoping for a more personal experience. Instead it seemed like our guide was reading off a script. She was very knowledgeable and talked consistently about the different plants and fungi but unfortunately it was lost on our teens. The only real interactions she gave us was when she would correct our posture or "heels down" every couple minutes or "shorten your reigns" (what does that even mean?) The instructions were very repetitive and felt like we were being talked to like children instead of adults. I do understand that this is her first year here so maybe she's still learning. If we were ever to be back in the area I would definitely consider taking a ride again but maybe try a different guide.

Had a great option for the older kids (6 and 8) to horse back ride while the younger (3) and I had a chuck wagon breakfast. The best breakfast I have ever had. My youngest was also able to do a pony ride while we were out in the "hills" eating breakfast. Everyone had a blast and would definitely do again.

Excellent horseback riding! The location is perfect. Pretty scenery. Food and beverage options right there for either before or after your ride. The staff were wonderful to work with. Very professional, patient and they provided lots of great information during our ride.

What a great amenity at the KOA campground! The stables were clean, the horses look well cared for, and the staff were all really nice. When we arrived for our ride the staff was super helpful explaining to us "city folk" about the horses, how to ride, etc... Sydney was our guide on the ride. She was very knowledgeable, friendly, and chatted with us throughout the ride. Highly recommend a ride!

We absolutely loved our trail ride. The horses were so gentle and trained. Our guides were awesome. It was just the 4 of us with our guides so it felt like we were just out riding with our family. It was extremely peaceful!!

Ok, but I wouldn't recommend unless *really slow* is your speed. My horse kept stumbling, it's gait seemed wrong somehow ( I ride quite a bit) and the poor thing was literally sleepwalking. The guide said that house was just "that way". I'm pretty sure the animal was sick. As for the tour, get ready for a slow, plodding, mildly interesting ride through the nearby woods, which have been largely destroyed by the Asian pine beetle, so the area looks pretty depressing in spots. You never really get any great views, never cross any streams, never get out into the open, and never ever break into a slow trot. No dismounting allowed, no changing order allowed, no leaving the extremely well worn path allowed. Basically the ride is kind of boring. Our guide rattled on constantly.

Awesome, fantastic, fun time. Wonderful guide, very knowledgeable. Relaxing, quiet ride through the hills. We saw a few very young baby deer along the trail along with spectacular scenery. The horse's were very well trained and well mannered. Pretty much know the way so there's not a lot of work for the riders to worry about which means it's great for beginners and kids alike. If you're going to Mt Rushmore or if you're in the area you owe it to yourself to stop by. We'll be back anytime we pass through..

The entire family had an amazing time! Note: I had called ahead of time to confirm that they have gentle horses that wouldn’t trot or run since I have osteoporosis and my daughter was recovering from a broken wrist. The horses are organized by temperament and know to stay in order. The worst thing was having to not allow the horses to stop and eat the grass! Now that I feel so comfortable with their horses and management, I would for sure sign up for the longer meal events next time.

Really great night at the Chuckwagon dinner! Wagon riders, you can bring your own drinks, including adult beverages. I’m not sure what magic they used, but there are zero flies at the chuckwagon site! The food is delicious, and you’ll even get the opportunity to get the recipes later. The music and comedy are fun too. Don’t forget your wallet in case you wish to tip or purchase one of their CDs. A perfect way to end a trip to the Black Hills.

Maddie was so accommodating! It was my little girls birthday that day and she made our ride happen with our group being all together! What a great riding experience! I have taken many trail rides across the US and this trail ride is one of my top rides! This was our 3rd year doing the trail rides. The staff is always amazing! First year for the Chuckwagon Dinner show. Cannot say enough about how incredible it was. Our family takes a camping trip to the Mt Rushmore KOA every year. My husband, who manages a stable, and I love to ride whenever we get the chance. The experience was great and the food was delicious the only things that we were not happy with was we did the trail ride in a group of 10 with adults and small children me and my wife were out at the back of the group and our daughter was at the front so there were seven riders between us so we felt we didn’t get the experience with her also there were several groups of riders we were the last group to leave the stables and the first ones to arrive at the dinner so in a way we felt our ride was cut short because of the children and for the amount of money we spent this would be nice to know in advance. This was an amazing experience with my 10 year old grandson. He had never ridden before and it had been 40 years since I was last on a horse. Such a great time! If you can ask for certain trail ride leaders, ask for Cara or Maddie! They both were great with my daughter. It was the very first time she had been on a big horse (since she has ridden the ones at the county fairs). She was extremely scared when her horse came to a stop to eat the grass. She kept crying that she wanted off so she could walk or wanted to go back to the stables. Cara didn't get frustrated, unlike me, with her at all. She finally had to call for "backup" though. We had a girls weekend in the Black Hills and went horseback riding. It was a fun experience. All the horses were well behaved and easy to handle. I’ll admit up front that I did not partake in the actual trail ride. However I did observe from the time the horses came to when they went back out in the evening. And you could set your watch by that for 6:30 am and pm. The barn is neat as a pin and all horses are fat and in great condition. I love horses and we were in the area; so, we stopped by. The staff were getting ready for their opening this weekend, so we didn't ride. We attended the cowboy cookout via some beautiful sweet horses from this stable. They start by pairing you with a horse that matches your experience as a rider. All of them were super friendly and sweet. The ride was fun, the tour guide was funny and friendly and the views on the way to the cookout are beautiful. We all talk about how exciting it was to ride up to the cookout. The food was delicious accompanied by some country tunes sung by cowboys Paul Larson and Donley Hewett. The beans alone are the cherry on top. Specially if you are a foodie! Best beans I’ve ever had. We chose to do this for our daughters birthdays and we all agree this was one of the top highlights of the trip. We plan to make this an annual trip. The people are so kind and amazing! You couldn't ask for better service as well. Your in luck when you go down to the main head quarters where you'll spot Wi-Fi, although it can be quite spotty as it depends where your at. This area is so cute!! It gives you this western vibe to it when you first drive in. The prices are fair and a little bit more since it is a KOA, but I suggest getting a scoop of their delicious ice cream before stopping by the stables to sign yourself up on a horse trail ride.
