Quality and grade of sushi was very good. However, for the price of omakase I expected the chef to cut the fish during omakase service and not prior - everything was presliced which is a No-No for omakase. Also, the chef doesn't tell you anything about the fish other than what they are which you can read on the board. For a no frills venue in a tiny mart stop the price is too high considering the location and it's a byob. Disappointing!

This was our first time at Umai. They serve a fantastic omakase that slowly builds on the taste and culminates with amazing combinations that are sweet and spicy and delicate at the same time. Another thing to note is that they have the 12 piece and the 18 piece omakase options. They themselves recommended that we start with 12 and decide if we want to go to 18 once we are at that point. We were pleasantly surprised by them not pushing the more expensive option. We will definitely come again and will recommend them to our friends.

We had reservations to sit down for 2 at 8:30 for a table (they led us to believe we were sitting at a table as we’ve done so in the past). When we showed up, they told us we had to sit at the counter for $85/pp or we couldn’t eat there. Every single table surrounding ‘the counter’ was open. My boyfriend doesn’t eat raw fish so this wasn’t an option - they tried to re direct us up the street to their new location. We said absolutely not (as we had brought our own bottle of wine) and went to eat right next door at Mizu Sushi (it was great!!!!) Posting this here so no one else falls for the same trap as they tried with us!!!!

Outside of Tokyo and NYC, this is the best Omakase we have found in NJ. Flavors were amazing ( although not super authentic or traditional) everything was unbelievably high quality and super fresh. The blends of flavors were outstanding. A bit pricey ($150 for 18 pcs) and the pieces were quite small. We had to order more food after the Omikasi. So bill for 3 ended up ( with tip) over $600.

Great Sushi. All the fish was very fresh and flavorful, I was particularly fond of the variety of seared belly cuts they offered. Several pieces also came in interesting combinations or with toppings that help it stand out. Expensive, but worth checking out.

Excellent experience! The food was phenomenal and the staff, extremely attentive. I did the 18 piece and went solo, booked last minute reservation as I was craving sushi but wanted the omakase experience close to home. I was a bit disappointed in the Big Mac because the beef was too chewy to swallow but still this place is highly recommend!

The best sushi we have ever had. Each bite was an insane flavor bomb. The fish is so fresh. The waitress/hostess was amazing and very sweet. The only thing was the music was very loud but would come back again and again.

Best sushi experience of my life, including high end Omakase in NYC and Tokyo. Every piece was a flavor bomb that was perfectly constructed. Definitely recommend going for the 18 pieces. It’s not cheap, but those last 6 pieces were the perfect finish to the meal. Additional feedback based on some conversations we overheard, this place is for true sushi people. You’re not going to find California rolls here. If you don’t like raw fish, this might not be your spot. That being said, the Wagyu pieces were incredible!

A gem of a sushi restaurant buried in a small strip center. The sushi was OUTSTANDING. Omikase was exceptional. Perfect ratio of fish/rice. Jalapeño yellowtail was outstanding. The service was great. There was a great vibe with some cool music. It’s over a 30 minute drive from my home but I can see this becoming a regular stop. Don’t be fooled by the location. This is not to be missed. One more thing. “CAVIAR BUMP”. Must have. Back for the 2nd time tonight. Saturday night vibe was great sitting at a high top. The service (with a smile) was outstanding!

This attractive but tiny venue is geared toward omakase, although my specialty roll was attractive and tasty, as was my companion's tuna-avocado salad; also the plates are very pretty. And the edamame in truffle salt is yummy. However. It was chilly, the music was uncomfortably loud, there was nothing warm to order--no soup, no tea, and possibly saddest of all, no dessert. I wanted to find my perfect sushi place, unfortunately I did not.

Incredible omakase. Wonderful service. Better than many omakase experiences in Manhattan. Atmosphere is fine but not premium, which is a contrast to the incredible food and high prices. But this place is a gem nonetheless.

My husband and I ate there tonight for the first time. Allen and his staff provided a dining experience so exquisite that I feel my words would not do it justice. My best advice is to go there for your own omikasi experience or any other kind of sushi experience and you will not be disappointed in any way.

Umai is literally the best sushi I have ever had. Quality is always a 20/10. Every piece is heaven. I try to get there as often as I can. It is the most fun atmosphere and I cannot go too long without the craving. They treat you like family and the experience is also a 20/10.

I went here for lunch with a friend on a weekday afternoon when the restaurant opened. It's located in a small strip shopping center with limited parking, but on a weekday it was no problem. On a weekend you may have to use the nearby municipal parking lot. The restaurant is relatively small inside, with seating at the counter, high top tables, and regular tables. The counter is reserved for omakase, but you can also get omakase at the tables if you dine with someone who wants something else. The seaweed salad we got as an appetizer was fresh and delicious, as were the edamame. Since I ordered the 18 piece omakase, we got a huge bowl of edamame at no extra cost. We also received two bottles of water for free. The omakase was superb, and my friend's sushi roll was also quite delicious. The omakase was served first with 10 pieces, and then with another 8 pieces. $150 for 18 pieces is not inexpensive, but the quality and originality were terrific. The menu is quite extensive for such a small restaurant. Definitely a great place for omakase and sushi rolls.

This restaurant is bar none the best sushi spot in north jersey. Truly deserves a Michelin star. The sushi is flown in from Japan and literally melts in your mouth no teeth required 😂. I've been here more than five times already and never ever disappointed. The steak surprisingly was also phenomenal and arrived with the perfect sides. The sushi rolls are also good but tbh the sushi over rice is my absolute favorite. Allen the owner is truly a talented chef and doesn't mess around. He takes what he does very seriously and deserves recognition. The only negative is the place is too good, is always busy and i can never get a reservation 😂. Jokes aside the food is an experience and you leave here content.

Enjoyed the yellowtail jalapeño and tuna tartare (w/ crunch and caviar) appetizers. Ponzu sauces were amazing! The special rolls had great fish but rice was a little over compressed. Pieces of toro, uni and unagi were very small but extremely tasty. Hand rolls were excellent. I would def go back and sit at the bar. FYI, they charge a hefty credit card fee (4%) even if you’re using a debit card, which is not cool. So bring ca$h. I go to a lot of great spots in NYC and this is NYC quality without the commute. Definitely worth the $$$$!

Fantastic experience here at Umai Sushi and Steak house. First of all the location is super unassuming. It’s hidden in a tiny shopping strip with decent parking. The chefs and owners are friendly and wonderful. The food was absolutely phenomenal. The fish is so fresh and everything is curated to perfection. We did the 18 piece omakase and it was awesome. Started off with some edamame and sparkling water and then just dove into the experience. Now for my standard COVID comments as of February 2023. It’s pretty common now I guess but no one wore masks. The location is not huge and sitting at the bar could get crowded. I will say that I felt completely fine throughout the whole dinner and had no issues. Other than the bar, the seating is nicely distanced if you have any concerns.

Genuine omakase experience, easily one of the best (if not the actual best) I've had in NJ. I've had omakase in NYC (Yasuda, Nakazawa, Kotaru), in Tokyo (OG Yasuda, Sushi Dai, Sushi Sho Masa), and the standards in Jersey City (Domo Domo, Sushi by Bou). Umai is the closest that an NJ sushi restaurant has come to top tier edomae sushi (limited of course by my experiences). The owner is also very gracious, accommodating, and humble. Overall this experience is top notch. My new go-to sushi spot near home.

Without a doubt lives up to its reputation and the hype! The sushi here is so fresh, so different. If you are looking for run of the mill sushi, this isn't the place. This is high end! Tastes that you've never tasted before. We've gone twice now and we're hooked. We've tried a few different appetizers and several rolls both times and each was incredible. Can't wait to try Omakase next time! The decor & music are a vibe. We find ourselves Shazamming every song. This place is an EXPERIENCE!

You will find superior-quality Sushi and Sashimi selections. The Omakase is excellent and very creative! Pay attention to how crunchy the Nori seaweed is. Not all places have this. It is priced, but when it comes to Japanese, usually quality and price go along.

Authentic Japanese sushi with emphasis on select magnificent tuna Chutoro, Otoro and at this visit three kinds of uni (sea urchin) two from Hokkaido and one California. Japanese Aji was also on the special board. Highest quality A5 Wagyu beef rounds out this menu. More reasonably priced selection of rolls (decent size) and very good selection of a la carte sushi you would find at better NY restaurants. All at this small strip mall location in Verona. Again, a concentration of the best-of-the- best Japanese sushi. Less noodles, fewer soups, and didn’t see better sushi staples like Liver of Monkfish etc. If you are looking for the best of the best for a few very select couple of items paired with a solid roll or two… recommend pairing with your own bottle of Shochu. The Omakase is actually fairly priced for the quality of the finest fish available. Left one star off as temp of the environment was a bit too cold to be comfortable…. Though I am sure the fish appreciate it!

In Japanese, “umai” means good. But this meal was anything but. The dining experience caters to people who enjoy long waits, overpriced food, and minimal customer service. The kitchen opposed personal preferences, which would be fine if it were a three-starred Michelin establishment in Manhattan; not a middling asian steakhouse in Verona, NJ. I went in with high hopes, but your $ will be better spent at any other food option on Bloomfield Ave.
