Good food, reasonably priced and plentiful. I had the spicy pork chops and eggs. Excellent service. Place is clean and well lit. Rice is a bit mushy. Asian American fusion style diner place.

Great food, chill ambiance, amazing service and reasonably priced! Went to check out this fusion spot for breakfast since it’s across the street from the Freehand Hotel. It’s very popular and there were lots of regulars (lots of “I don’t need the menu, thanks!”—always a good sign!) The servers are so cool, very nice, quick and attentive. We had a nice chat with our server about her cool piercings and she was so sweet and made us feel at home! The steak, eggs and rice are a popular dish, but I got the beef pho which was delicious…and the leftovers were even tasty cold! (Unless it’s gazpacho I *never* eat cold soup, but we don’t have a microwave in our room and I was not gonna let that tasty pho go to waste!) The iced tea is delicious and not bitter. I highly recommend this restaurant! We’re visiting from NYC and our hometown is known for great food…& this place did NOT disappoint! If y’all ever expand east coast, I’ll be a regular!

I was traveling through LA and had breakfast here on the way to the airport. It was absolutely phenomenal. All day breakfast or lunch and dinner items anytime as well. Big portions and the best asian fusion I've ever had. The dan dan noodles were awesome.

BLUF: Friendly service, really good food, clean facility, great location. Stopped in for early lunch/late breakfast. Our hotel was across the street. The servers were incredibly friendly and had recommendations not just for dishes, but also what kind of sauces will go well with them. Everything was delicious. I had the Spicy Pork Chops and my wife had the Lemongrass Grilled Pork Chops. If you're staying anywhere within a .5mi walking distance (or more even) stop by and try this place out. We were really hungry, so I apologize for photos of food that's already been dug in to... Let that be the message, it was too good to wait.

Took them almost an hour to make the worst banh mi I've ever tried. Bread dry and crusty. Meat was cold and terribly cut kept falling out of the sandwhich. And the bread was stale and made a mess everywhere. Originally dine in but asked for take out since my order took so long to come by.

Simple place for breakfast. Food was good. Seeing they were Vietnamese i was Hoping for a nice twist on breakfast, but it was just a simple hamburger patty with eggs. Like mamma would make at home.

I saw the Buzzfeed video 7 years ago and have wanted to visit this place ever since. We were visiting from Ohio and it was absolutely worth it. The food was excellent and the service was even better! I enjoyed the steak, fried rice, and eggs. My partner loved the spicy pork chops, and also the Saturday lunch box special, braised pork belly with quail eggs and steamed rice.

Great food and good service. Got my food in a good amount of time and it was made perfect. My first time here and I came because it is the same name as my late Uncle John. Will definitely be back with more people to try too!

It was my first time to LA, and I was seeking a quaint breakfast place. This is it! Never before would I have imagined how well Chinese and American could mesh for breakfast but it is on point. The ribeye was so tender and flavorful. Having fried rice for breakfast is now a treat for me!

This is my second time eating at this wonderful restaurant. It is located in the Stillwell Hotel on Grand Ave, close to the Whole Foods. My absolute favorite dish is the spicy pork chop with white rice. I also ordered the spicy fried tofu for the first time and it was absolutely yummy, although I don’t think they added the spicy seasoning to it. I also recommend trying their milk teas. I ordered the Jasmine milk tea. I am so excited for their relocation to 8th St. next to the Golden Gopher. Definitely see myself becoming a regular here and trying out other items on their menu.

Really good food! Fair price, and the staff is suuuuper nice. The chairs weren’t very comfortable, but it’s a down economy. I get it. Overall, I liked it. The chasu pork is really good.

Such a cute, old-school spot. I'd just finished a job interview and was feeling optimistic for the first time in months, so decided to treat myself to a lunch. I randomly walked past Uncle John's, and was charmed by its potential -- nothing exciting --- linoleum tabletops and the like, but it reminded me of old school downtown chinese-american diners of my youth, and that indeed was what it was. I ended up settling on the lunch special (teriyaki chicken and broccoli + perfect steamed rice), an 8-dollar meal, which seems almost unheard of these days. The portions were commensurate, what what one would actually eat, and the food was tasty. Nothing wildly exciting, but a very pleasant experience, and appreciatively affordable for those of us who rarely get a treat. Their chili oil is also super tasty. I look forward to checking out their new spot when it opens and trying the Boba next time. They were already out when I went. FYI it's cash or zelle-only while they're in the process of moving.

The food is great! Has a consistent flavor every time and satisfies the tastebuds for chinese food I haven’t had pork chops in a long time but these are very good The service is always amazing!! The atmosphere rating is low because it does feel empty but currently they are moving so it’s understandable

Family owned. Great food, great value, great ambience. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Open early at 7 AM - 3 PM & than 5 PM - 9 PM. The only change is that instead of the order being taken at the table, you have to order at the register & pay in advance & than they will bring it to you. Numerous options of ordering through different apps to be delivered or for pick up.

I moved her about a week ago and Uncle John's was one of the first places I stopped at and I now have to look no further for anything else. I get coffee here every day and have had two of their lunch boxes (today was bbq pork w sesame cold noodles, minus a few bites I took before the photo) for only $8 and what great portions and quality they give you. The place is always filled with people eating and talking, customer service is the best. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!

I went on a Saturday late morning, and there was seating. Plenty of customers were content and eating, but the atmospheric volume was comfortable. I placed my order at the counter, took a number, then sat down at the table of my choice. Service was friendly and efficient! Food tasted clean and fresh. The Rye toast I had was one of the best rye I've had in a very long time. Everything hit the spot! It almost felt like you had a home cooked meal, which was something I had been craving for since being away from my own kitchen for a few days. It is now on my list of places to go, whenever I am in LA!

Originally was going to the Indian cuisine in the connecting building but they didn’t take card. So I went to uncle John’s and got the spicy pork chops and they were top tier. Along with the service from Olivia. Really good food and environment definitely give it a try if your in the area

I was passing by and saw that it had a high rating on Google. Went in to great customer service and excellent food. I started with their Thai tea with boba, I had their egg rolls(shrimp & pork), pork chops with rice and a fried egg. The Thai tea was delicious and the egg rolls were phenomenal. Nice and crispy with a solid dipping sauce. The pork chops were seasoned perfectly with a nice sweetness and the egg was a nice edition. I wish it had fried rice instead but overall it was a solid lunch. I’d definitely come back here again to try their other menu items.

This place used to be great. But now their service is horrible. I don't blame the employees but blame ownership. Their employees are doing their best. I understand good help is hard to find these days. But if that's the case ownership needs to roll up their sleeves and be there to assist.

The spicy pork chops were amazing, the fried rice was pretty good. I also ordered a large Thai iced tea which tasted like it's probably a small watered down. So probably don't order the large. Also the boba wasn't consistent.

We came in here for a quick breakfast, and this place has a very diverse menu, with too many spicy options though. The personnel is friendly. The coffee and Thai tea were great, and the food was tasty. It takes a while to be prepared though.

This is a hidden gem. The employees here always put a huge smile on my face by being very sweet and welcoming. Lots of variety and options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. With great prices.

Awesome small mom & pop restaurant with family vibes. We had the fried pork chops with fried rice and a fried egg on top. Also added a side order of the fried shrimp. Definitely a special occasion meal reserved for your designated cheat day! Great food, great service, and reasonably priced. Whenever you're in the area a must try, you won't be disappointed.

The spicy pork chop with eggs is a delicious, optimally portioned breakfast. The chop is lightly fried and juicy. Perfect overeasy eggs sealed the deal for me.

Very undercooked steak. I had to leave about a 1/3 of it uneaten. This place isn't quite the value darling it used to be, as the steak and eggs, while still reasonable, is pricier. If that is the case it should be cooked better.

It’s a small Asian restaurant in downtown. The servants are enthusiasm. They have plenty kinds of foods such as omelette, burgers, wonton, fried rice and chowfun etc. The house chowfun is very tasty and authentic. Lots of meats and shrimp inside. The flavor is fit and so nice with the spicy sauces. And the house wonton noodle soup is great. The wontons inside is big and solid taste. I have tried all of the $8 lunchbox meals. I have eaten there sober and hammered. I have eaten it fresh and from my fridge overnight. It's always great. Breakfast, Chinese, and now Vietnamese food. Give them your money.

If you aren’t open, fix your hours. I drove 25mins to have this bc the reviews were good and said it was open to come to the restaurant and it be very much closed. Do better.

My dad and I came to Uncle John's cafe from exercising in the gym because we wanted the medium rare Steak and Sunny Side Up Eggs dish with fried rice, as shown in the famous Buzzfeed Worth It episode. A particular server in the restaurant was kind that we had to give him a decent service money tip. I also ordered Ice Thai Tea without Boba. The portion of the steak and eggs with fried rice was more humongous than we expected, so make sure your tummies are empty enough to finish the entire meal. I ate the steak with the A1 steak sauce that was complementary to the dish, but I recommend eating the steak without the sauce. The steak was easy to cut like butter and the taste was...DELICIOUS! The steak, sunny-side-up eggs, and fried rice complemented each other for a perfect brunch meal. In addition, I tried to bite the chili, but it was absolutely spicy; I drank half of my Ice Thai Tea because the Tea was sweet and refreshing for the front of my taste buds. For the foodies that want a huge meal and anyone who just exercised in the gym or on the sidewalk, give Uncle John's cafe a try.

A good place to have an all American-Asian breakfast. The service is very good and the food is made when you order it. Be a lot patient with the servers as the place get crowded specially during breakfast hours..

Uncle Johns is a classic downtown spot in LA. Steak, Eggs and Fried Rice are my go to. Incredible food with extremely friendly staff, and the fusion just works. Everytime I'm in LA I find myself at Uncle Johns at least twice 🤣

The wife and I went before leaving LA and it was super busy but the staff handled it so well and food came out quickly and was amazing!!! Came because of buzzfeed but I’d visit again and regularly because of how good it was.

Just want to shout out the daily $8 lunch box deal! The current offering for Saturday is pork belly with quail eggs and rice with pickled vegetables, and it is SO delicious and you get so much food. Really incredible value. This place is so relaxed. Menu is a delightful blend of classic diner options and Chinese/Hong Kong dishes. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. Would definitely come back! We were here for a conference, and Uncle John’s beats the hell out of eating at the hotel.

A classic downtown breakfast spot with very loyal local customers. Not pretentious at all, just great old school American & HK Chinese food like steak and eggs, Hong Kong style spicy pork chops, and classic American breakfast diner food. The mornings are always full of first responders, tradesmen, families, and nostalgic Asian students. I've been going here for nearly 20 years and I don't think the menu has ever changed. It reminds me of the food my Filipino grandma made me growing up. The corned beef with fried rice is nothing mind-blowing but it warms my soul.

Outstanding dining experience. Got the French toast with peanut butter, the shrimp chow meón and veggie chow meón and WOW! The food was beyond excellent, the staff was quick and ON IT and overall I say 5/5!

Decent chinese food that will do in a rush or when there are no other options. They overcooked the friend rice to the point that it was an inedible sticky mess had to ask them to redo the plate, they did and it was fine but it came with a side of attitude. I returned for a dinner take-out a few days later and the same plate was more expensive, nothing different only the time of the day. I was in a pinch so had to get it but it'll be the last time I ever come to this place.

The steak was good! The fried rice could use a little more seasoning but paired with the steak it made a nice balance. The potatoes were good but I prefer shredded ones for hash browns and they weren't as crispy as I thought it would be. I would come back for the steak and to try other things on the menu.

1st time visit. Low key spot. Great daily lunch specials (even available on a Saturday!) Every plate coming out of the kitchen made us go "Oh! Shoulda ordered that!" Quail eggs creamy on the inside, generous serving of pork belly, pickled garnish on rice was awesome, too!

Your greeted with friendly service starts when you walk through the door by the server Jose. I had the spicy orange chicken and fried rice which was prepared to perfection. You get a very good portion from the lunch menu.. & you definitely have to try the Thai tea...
