I just spent three days at Wilderness Lodge with my the sisters and our 89 year old mother. All in all, we had a wonderful time. Our mother has mobility issues, and getting in and out of our cabin was a bit of a challenge... I don't know if other cabins had easier access, but ours required bringing her up/down 9 steps any time we left the cabin. Getting her to the waters edge near our cabin was out of the question, but all Wilderness guests can get a parking pass to Rivers Edge campground, which is much more level. Our mother was not really excited about actually being by the river, so we stayed close to our cabin and just went in shifts, with someone keeping her company in the room while the others enjoyed the water. The setting was very pleasant, we set our beach chairs and floaties in the water under a canopy and we would visit with other tourists as they floated by. The first night we ran into an issue with our sleeping arrangements, due to a housekeeping oversight. It was too late that evening to work it out, but we were able to make due. The housekeeper promptly dealt with it as soon as we made them aware, and the owner went above and beyond to make sure we had no more issues and were satisfied with the rest of our stay. A full breakfast and supper are provided with the reservations, along with a sack lunch. The hot meals were delicious, although some of the portion sizes were impractically large! You definitely get your money's worth of food. Concerning our cabin, it all depends on your expectation. This is a river cabin, not a hotel or spa.The entry which joined the two cabins in our building was quite dark and musty, but when you remember this is a cabin made of reclaimed wood located in the woods on a gravel road next to a river, a little musty and a little dusty is just going to be part of things. Once through the door to our individual cabin, it was acceptably fresh. The decor is cute, we had both a full and a queen bed in the bedroom with vintage quilts, along with other antique furnishings. The living area had a sink, microwave, coffee pot, and mini fridge, a bookcase type cabinet with some books and games, dinette table and 3 chairs, rocker, loveseat/hide-a-bed, leather sofa (this was quite uncomfortable) and coffee table. Some of the furniture was really past it's prime, and had seen better days. A couple pieces really needed replaced. The lighting was very dim in the evenings, brighter bulbs in the ceiling fixtures would have been better for us. There were big windows filling two sides of the room, looking out over the foliage. With the leaves filled out, it was almost like being in a tree house. I would love to see it in the fall. There was a large deck, shared with the other cabin. The resort has an in ground pool that we did not utilize, and they have all the traditional outdoor games expected at resorts. It is my understanding that this resort is under fairly new ownership. While there are many little areas that could be tweaked here and there, overall they are doing a great job. They are very attentive to their guests and I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone looking to unplug and enjoy some peace and quiet. I would visit again.

This was our 2nd time at the Wilderness Lodge resort. Both times our room was clean, the staff were super helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed our time. I have to say that this is definitely the place to “disconnect” from tech (no TV, spotty service) and it’s worth it! We spent several days fishing the Black River, playing games outside or in the rec room, and enjoying nature! Our visit this time was made even more special by Blaine! He talked with us about fishing and even caught some crawdads for us to use as bait! As we found last year, the rooms are not fancy, but they are clean. This year the new mattresses were a big plus—super comfy! We also enjoyed the food at breakfast and dinner as well as the bagged lunches! The Black River cake is delicious!! If you are expecting luxury service and accommodations, this probably isn’t the place for you; however, it is VERY family friendly and most of your time is spent outdoors—fishing/swimming/floating on the river, hiking/walking, or just enjoying nature! We’ll be back for sure!!!!

The cabin was very expensive and not taken care of well. Felt like I was staying in a run down hunting cabin. Definitely not worth the price. The staff was nice and the food was good.

Our Wilderness Weekend couldn’t have gone better! Perfect weather, beautiful scenery, fun outdoor activity, fire pit time, and best friends in the world. There was a big open space where people could set up their own activities or throw ball or frisbee, within sight of the main building or fire pit if parents want to watch kids. The meal times were very comfortably managed and the food was delicious, with the bar/lounge to gather afterwards, warmed by fireplace and friends. Really enjoyed the river, kayaking was my choice but others chose canoes and inner tubes were available for anyone looking to let the river do all the work. The staff was very friendly and responsive to requests. The whole experience was secluded enough to help us unplug from our individual worlds, but comfortable and welcoming enough that we weren’t really “roughing it.”

I recently enjoyed an unforgettable weekend at the Idyllic Wilderness Lodge Resort, nestled amidst the serene beauty of the pellucid Black River. This retreat provided the ideal setting for a "Big Chill" weekend with my lifelong friends, and it surpassed all our expectations. The lodge's rustic charm and seamless integration into the breathtaking natural surroundings immediately captivated us. The idyllic setting, featuring lush forests and the crystal-clear waters of the Black River, transported us to a world of tranquility and serenity. One of the evenings, we gathered around a perfectly positioned fire pit, and it felt as if the stars above had conspired to create the most magical ambiance. The crackling of the fire, the warm glow, and the camaraderie of friends made it an unforgettable night. The lodge itself was a masterpiece of design, seamlessly blending rustic elegance with modern comforts. Our rooms were both cozy and spacious, impeccably clean, and equipped with every amenity we could desire. What truly set this experience apart was the exceptional service. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel like cherished guests, extending a genuine warmth and hospitality that made us feel like we were among friends. In summary, the Idyllic Wilderness Lodge Resort is a hidden gem that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking a tranquil retreat in nature's embrace. Our rejuvenating and gratitude-filled departure only left us eagerly looking forward to our next visit to this special place.

Wilderness Lodge is a special place nestled in the Ozark wilderness with cozy accommodations and wonderful staff. The kitchen crew provided delicious and filling meals that gave us plenty of energy for the activities of the day. The river was refreshing and is some of the most beautiful water you will find. Thanks Wilderness Lodge owners and staff for a fantastic experience. The picture below was taken a few miles away but gives you a sense of the clarity of the water. It's truly amazing.

In addition to the cabins, Wilderness Lodge also offers a variety of other amenities, including a swimming pool, mini-golf course, and game room. Rating restaurant only. It's a local hidden secret that you can call or email to reserve a table at their restaurant even if not staying at the resort. It is a nice location, with cozy eclectic decor in the restaurant. It is a throwback to camp like 50 years ago. We arrived early and had snacks and drinks in the bar. The bartender was friendly and made us feel welcome. Once our reservation time came we wandered into the dining room. There is no hostess or waitress, so dinner is a bit of a mystery. You walk around the restaurant looking for the table with your name on it. You then sit and wait for whatever food they decide to make. There is no menu. In our case it was a small salad, chicken cordon bleu w/veggies , and a brownie w/a scoop of ice cream. Overall it was a good experience. The chicken did need seasoning, but we were pleasantly surprised that the veggies were fresh and not canned or frozen. That is hard to find in this area. The real surprise was the bill....around $85 for two people plus drinks. Thats $35 each for food and a mandatory 20% tip and tax. I'd expect $10 less and note beforehand on the mandatory tip. I wasn't expecting that price for the quality and amount of food served. Maybe the surpise was also because we had no idea of the cost until the bill came.😳 If your looking for an overpriced dinner at a pretty location with decent food, this is for you. And around here, that is sometimes what you need!

We stayed at Wilderness Lodge to celebrate my wife's 40th birthday. This place is like something out of a movie. It feels like being at summer camp but way nicer. The room was beautiful, the property was picturesque, and the food was pretty great. I asked the staff to put some candles on my wife's desert (I didn't want to ask for anything special because they were very busy) and they brought all of the kitchen staff out to sing for her. The vibe at this place is super laid back but hospitable. You aren't going to be pampered but you will be treated as a welcomed guest on this beautiful property. It's the perfect place to stay if you want to explore beautiful southeast MO in rustic comfort.

Review: Wilderness Lodge My spouse and I had a great, first visit to Wilderness Lodge in late Sept., 2022, and definitely plan to return in the future. The meals were well-prepared and nutritious. There seemed to be a Mediterranean flare that occasionally appeared in the main entree, salad, or appetizer. The dinners were heavy on vegetables and very light on starches. The servers were very friendly and efficient. We stayed at one of the Riverside Suites. A warning: “riverside” does not equate to “river view.” Our cabin was in a beautiful location, surrounded by foliage, but there was no view whatsoever of the river nearby. The cabin was beautifully decorated, with pleasant artwork and furniture that was a little old but well-maintained and functional. The suite was very spacious and in great, rustic condition. We appreciated the good water pressure, great shower, and even the wall heater in the bathroom, as well as the mostly LED lighting. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We found that our cabin had no heat, and after a cold night, the problem was fixed almost immediately the next morning. The trouble was that staff were hard to find, except at meal times. I’m sure this is because it was very late in the tourist season and there were very few guests. Over out three-day stay, we probably went to the office about six times (check-in and -out, seeking basic info, etc.) and never once found anyone. There was also absolutely no written material about nearby sites, directions, how to access the excursions on the river, closest urgent care facility, etc. (Just use the internet, I suppose. Luckily, for us, there were good cellular connections.) There was no information in our cabin either, not even an emergency number. (What to do if there is a power outage or plumbing leak?) Any questions of ours had to wait until meal time, when we got tips from servers, or in one case, from a clerk at the local Dollar General. I offer all of this in hopes that the Lodge will produce a very simple, one- or two-page information sheet.

We've visited many times over the years as our children were growing up. My wife has visited as a child, so a pretty long history with this place. The cabins are awesome. Ours had a large stone fireplace, which the outstanding staff kept supplied with firewood. We also enjoyed the large screened in porch which offered great views of the river and surrounding hills. The cabin came with small kitchen sink and coffee maker. All in all it is a wonderful place to relax, hike around or play a unique and entertaining round of mini golf. Warning: my almost certain, epic hole-in-one was ruined by a cat leaping out and swatting the ball! We brought our two dogs; this place was absolutely perfect for vacationers with furry friends.

What an experience! I loved every second and I can't wait to go back. I look forward to making this a yearly get away. The black river was absolutely gorgeous - pristine and clear. At the lodge the staff was extremely friendly and courteous. I loved that there weren't TV's in the room, so I got to spend extra quality time with the one I love with little to no distractions. Had a great time playing ping pong and foosball in the game room. It was awesome to sit around the fire pit or in the hot tub at night and star gaze - so many more stars visible away from city lights. The screened in porches in the cabins were great to sit out in any time of day - we turned off the air conditioner and opened the doors/windows at night and was surrounded by the sounds of nature....soo relaxing and peaceful.

When I tell you I just spent the most amazing 4 days at the best vacation/retreat spot near by I've ever been to I'm am for REAL. The Wilderness Lodge is only 2 hours from St. Louis on The Black River. The entire place is small enough to easily walk around yet you have so many things to do. Mini golf, zip lines, pool, hot tub, play ground, rec room, bar, library, and a ton of stuff we didn't even get to. Laying on the hill at night and looking up at the stars was so so cool. All of our meals were provided. Everything was homemade and DELICIOUS. We brought our own snacks, beer, and soda for during the day and after dinner. We also had light appetizers like crackers and cheese or hummus and pita before dinner every night which was lovely. Sack lunches were an additional fee but well worth it. And they packed gourmet sandwiches and snacks each day. Better than I would have done for sure. The waitstaff was incredible. Accommodated every single dietary need and had meals prepared as needed for those specifics. I have been on a couple cruises and have stayed in some nice resorts and I would choose the food we had at this lodge over any of those other places. Without a doubt. They set us up for our float trip with the near by float company. You have free access to a beautiful swimming area on the Black River at the campground 30 seconds away. Our cabin was cleaner and cuter than any hotel. Our wrap around screened in porch even had adorable day beds and David slept out there a couple nights and loved it. I enjoyed the AC in our cabin and there was a fireplace that would have been so cozy in the winter. We spent most of our time in and around the main lodge area. They have a cash bar. The pool and deck area were perfect for a bunch of kids to play while the parents hang out. The center of the resort has the pool, lodge, mini golf, volleyball, fire pit, play ground, hot tub, rec room etc. We felt totally fine letting our 8yr old and up age kids roam around without supervision. The only wifi was in the lodge area and it wasn't great but after the first 24 hours I didn't really miss it. They housed 60 people, each in their own family cabin, and we didn't feel at all crowded. You MUST go check this place out. We are already planning a trip back for another float trip.

I visited The Wilderness Lodge in Lesterville, MO with my extended family. We had a total of 60 people in our reservation and family members from age 1-92! Becky and her staff were more than accommodating from the time I booked our cabins to check out! Accommodations- cabins were spacious and quaint. They are situated around the main area and further up the hills. The screened in porches were a crowd favorite. They were decorated nicely, were supper cool (AC wise), and were clean. I’d make sure to bring utensils and cups and paper towels for the room, though. Food- I’d give it 10 stars ⭐️. We had 60 ppl and multiple duet restrictions including a few vegans. We are LOVED the food. Biscuits and gravy was the winner amongst many of us. The portion sizes were right on and if we wanted more we got it! They thought about the kids dinners as well. The wait staff was so kind and never appeared frustrated or bothered by our group even though I’m sure we were needy most evenings. Staff- can’t say enough about the staff! They all were available for whatever we needed and went out if their way to help us. They made sure we were happy and were so helpful with the 23 kids we had. Crafts near the dinning area and cereal and fruit in the morning. They handled special kid requests without any complaints. Amenities- so much to do!!! My 8, 6, and 4 year old were safe hanging out in the rec room, main, lodge, or playground with out me always being right there with them. The kids wandered around and there was enough meeting places that our large crowd didn’t feel cramped but we could all be together in the dining room and rec room. The pool is smaller but with the multi layered deck there was plenty of room. Part of our group floated one day and the other went to Elephant Rock State Park. We all left so happy to have had our reunion together at The Wildness Lodge! It’s truly a hidden gem.

We have been to just about every camping/lodge/cabin place in Missouri, and just discovered this hidden gem! This place was so amazing, the employee's were so kind and helpful "we wanted to take a couple home with us: Cynthia, and the two gentlemen bartenders" to name a few. The cabins were clean, spacious, and the beds were complete extasy to sleep in. The breakfast, and dinners provided were delicious, and I cleaned my plate every single meal. We will DEFINITELY be coming back!!

This place was great for my little family. We had two toddlers and my husband and I. I certainly overpacked. Everything was there that we needed. There was so many activities but each area had its own stuff already there! The Rock Cottage was cozy and having the bedrooks split up were great. The first night we ate dinner in the restaurant. The 2nd night we picked it up togo and ate in our room. I had the best meal i had ever eaten in my life. All employees had masks on and the dining and check in was all spaced out so it was appropriate for protection against Covid. When we checked in, i waa given a short tour of the main areas, which was extremely helpful. I am super impressed. Pool was great. The only things that i wished would of been different, a softer bed. Lol. I would recommend this place 100x and the staff was great and the food was incredible. Well worth the $ to not have to pack food and all the other camping stuff.

We had a wonderful experience here at Wilderness Lodge Resort!! The vibe is incredible! You wake up to soft classical music being piped from the dining lodge as you walk up to your home cooked, delicious breakfast. Dinner is also provided and is great as well! The ambiance is lovely - you are surrounded by antiques, beautiful art and relaxing music. This is a top notch retreat!! We will be back!

Right next to the beautiful Black River! The cabins were comfortable and roomy. Loved the lodge and wonderful home style cooking. Every meal was delicious. The staff was courteous and wanted to ensure you enjoyed your stay. The salt water pool was great after floating on the river. Miniature golf and the zip line we’re fun for the little one in our group. Cabin #22 could have used more lighting - perhaps a ceiling fan with light fixture.

We stayed here over the 4th of July holiday in the Riverside Suites cabin, and will defiantly be going back! Please read for our reasoning of why this place is worth every penny! At first I was leery of the cost. Most places, including hotels, you have a base price for the room and after 2 people you pay a extra fee for those extra people. Here, you pay the cost per night, per person. Yikes! By the end of the first night we were already discussing what a great deal this turned out to be! When we checked out on Sunday we left well over 30% gratuity for the simple fact that they went above and beyond for their guests and they so deserve it. SO, let’s break this down: You’re going camping at a well-known campground (we won’t name names here), you decide to get a cabin, the price you see is for the cabin you’re renting for 2 people. Any additional people you pay an extra fee per person, per night. These cabins have beds – but you have to remember to pack and bring the sheets and blankets. You need to also remember to pack and bring bath towels, and beach/pool towels. Sure, this doesn’t cost anything extra since you have these items at home - but you’re looking at more work. Wilderness provides bed linens and towels, no need to remember! (Hand soap and body wash too!) Again, at these well-known campgrounds, you might have a mini-fridge in the room, if not you’ll need to bring coolers and keep picking up ice to keep your food cold. At Wilderness you have a mini-fridge and coffee maker (they have everything you need for this), all in a small kitchenette area. At those campgrounds you also have to bring enough food to eat for your party the entire time you’re there. Food costs add up quickly. You also need to pack the supplies you need to cook all that food (most likely out on the camp fire or BBQ grill), which takes up a lot of time, and the clean up afterwards – more time suckers and added stress. At Wilderness you get breakfast (home cooked and different each morning, we’re talking biscuits and gravy; French toast, omelets, etc. and the meals are customizable and DELICIOUS) and a 3 course dinner (again, home cooked and very delicious). If you don’t eat meat, no problem! They will create a vegetarian alternative for you (which is what we had) that was sooo delicious! They ask you as your making the reservation if anyone in the party has any dietary restrictions which was very nice of them to tweak their meals (or create separate dishes) to accommodate their guests. There was no time wasted to pack, cook or clean up for us. The dining room is family style, each party has their own table with their name on it so you're guaranteed to have a table. We had the same server for our entire trip and absolutely loved him! They have so many things for people to do while they are here. You really don't need to pack and bring any games - they pretty much provide them all! They have a rec room filled with games, pool tables, etc., mini-golf course, small zip line, salt water pool, hot tub, basketball net, shuffle board, volleyball and more! They also have table games in your cabin and many many books to read! There is a large area with a campfire for people to gather around at night. If you forgot anything at home - ask them, they probably have it and will gladly let you use it! They have river access but do not have kayaks/canoes/rafts on site. You need to go down the road about 2 minutes (it's walk-able, but we drove it since we had coolers for the float trip) to their other campground, make reservations for what you want so you are guaranteed to have it available. So, price was amazing for the quality of services we received. Every person we met who worked there loved their job, was in a positive and happy mood, treated us with the utmost respect and truly wanted to make sure we were absolutely happy, comfortable, and did not want for anything. Every guest we met was happy and loved their experiences, several were return guests who visit every year since finding this little gem! We will be back!

This place is wonderful in many ways. The food was simply amazing. A three course dinner that has me dreaming of being pampered again. The salad dressing...yum! The owners and staff were exceptional and accommodating at every turn. They seem to be making updates to the property as time permits. We took kiddos ranging in age from 2-13 and none were ever bored. To be sure, I would have thought and 8 hour drive would solidify us not making a return, but that is definitely not the case. We'll probably wait a few years, but we will be back!

Cocktail hour and absolutely delicious meals were served in the main lodge.... We hiked each day to burn off calories and to give Dr Watson (shih tsu) more exercise. Next visit we plan to take Dr Watson on his first canoe ride.

HIGHLY recommend. My husband and I stayed at the Hilltop Cabin for one night. The cabin itself was more than we expected, rustic feel but with luxury fittings. Clean room, comfortable king bed, and the hot water and strong shower pressure made for a better shower than at home. We were apprehensive about the communal meals, but that quickly changed when we saw the main lodge (adorable) and the gourmet food. Well worth the cost, and run by an attentive, professional family. They care about the details and it made for a wonderful experience.
