Best fish quality and attention to detail on making really nicely composed nigiri bites. Special rolls were good as well but easily the best nigiri in the area. Fairly priced considering the quality.

Came for lunch- the Jackpot Johnnie Roll is hands down the best sushi roll I’ve her had, and I have had a lot! Even better since my name is John too 😁

Lunch buyers beware.: The lunch specials is NOT a full portion of food and you will be hungry shortly after. I assumed an $18 chirashi lunch would have included enough rice and fish to sustain me but I was wrong. It had barely half a cup of rice and the thinnest sashimi slices I’ve ever had. The quality of the fish was very good however.

I love Yama food and the service! Been a regular for a while and the business is owned by a Korean family that offers delicious/fresh fish!

I’m surprised reading all the good reviews. Went there for the first time today and I was so disappointed, the quality of food is so bad. I have been to many sushi places but Yama Sushi is the worst so far.

It was a very good place. They were very efficient and the sushi was amazing. They also were very kid friendly and gave us kid friendly chopsticks because my kid didn't know how to use them.

I travel to Japan frequently and Yama Sushi in Denville is my favorite in the area. The quality of the fish is high and they really care and take the time to develop artistic creative maki sushi and rolls which are not just the standard you normally find. The employees are great along with the service.

Great place! Great variety and assortment of sushi rolls and sashimi that are delicious! Staff and service are exceptional and friendly. They regularly throw in a specialty roll on the house when we make medium to large orders. I can't say enough good things about this place.... you need to try it if you haven't. I only have two qualms with the place, and they're not really issues, just my personal preference and opinion.... it's BYOB, which some people like or prefer, I guess it's just falls under your preference, I wish it had a liquor license instead, and it's a small space for dining in. Not their fault they are restrained to the space they have, but if I'm being honest and critical, I wish it was a little larger space personally. I feel slightly claustrophobic or crowded when dining in, but others may like and prefer the smaller dining space and even call it intimate or more personal experience. Regardless, they're serving great food, the service is exceptional, and the place is great! Get to Yama Sushi, or you're missing out!!

The sushi is well balance with rice and fish, making it extra tasty. The sashimi is a good size with a good thickness to allow more flavor with each bite. You can request for certain type of fish in your order, at extra cost.

Went for the first time and the staff was so pleasant and friendly. I am usually not a fan of spicy rolls, not because of the spice but due to flavor, but the taste and texture of their rolls were all delicious. Looking forward to stopping by again.

This place is hands down the best sushi in NJ. I have been coming to this place since I was 7 and I'm now 22. The food is incredible and all the chefs specialty rolls are fantastic, always crafted with freshest ingredients. The owners of this place are some of the sweetest and the staff is attentive and kind. I cannot say enough good things about this place!

Cozy sushi restaurant. Everything tasted fresh and the service was attentive and quick. We arrive about half hour before closing and they were accommodating since we ordered quickly. We got the Yama special and the sashimi/Cali roll combo, as well as miso soup. Soup was steaming and perfect for the cold evening, and the fish was fresh. Of the three rolls in my Yama combo the spicy tuna was my favorite as it wasn’t too spicy but still had a great flavor. I’d be ok with less sauce on the eel but the crunch was nice. Also - their green tea is awesome. The sushi chef was also making a few take out orders while we were sitting at the sushi bar that looked good. Parking is in back, also street parking in front.

I was fortunate enough to stumble upon Yama when my son was 4. Yama made a special dish for him and that was all she wrote. He's 21 Now!! The setting has the Best neighborhood secret feel and the staff are ready with a Big Smile and HELLO when you step through the door. Everything is so Fresh and Delicious!! Beat a path there!! You will not regret it!!! :-D

Good quality fish and sushi. Owner and staff are always friendly and pleasant! This is one of the few places I would go in the area. There are many cheap quality sometimes not fresh fish restaurants in the area and this one cares about the quality. Owners are Koreans and they keep the place clean. HIGHLY recommend!!

Yama sushi has been my family’s local favorite sushi spot for the past 15 years. It’s always my first stop when I come back to NJ - it’s always the best experience, great sushi (I love the happy-Mazon roll, dynamite roll, jackpot Johnny roll & volcano roll!) and great service! I HIGHLY recommend to anyone in the area.

The Yama special salad is great.

I've eaten their food five times in the past 4 months. The food is excellent, the restaurant is clean, but small. One thing is annoying for me. Twice a food item ordered has not been in the take out bag. Perhaps they are rushed and forget...I don't know, but it is annoying and prevents me from ordering food more often. I guess I have to do an inventory if I order there again.

I'm so glad I got stuck in traffic on I-80! I had the best sushi ever, served and prepared by the nicest people ever! The chef made me a complimentary salad and they served hot green tea on this cold night. Their prices are more than reasonable and the fish is so fresh! If you're driving by or you live in the area, you have to go here for sushi! I'll make it a point to go back!

Very good sushi but our waitress was clueless. She got confused totally. I said "roll" but she brought 1 piece of sushi. Watch out for inattentive staff.

The best sushi in town and the chef is very kind.

It's a relatively small storefront that you could easily enough miss while passing through, and that would be unfortunate. I've been to many sushi places. Take nothing away from this one, but there are certainly those that offer better asthetics, whether in the fancier or earthier direction. The prices at this one are perhaps average. However, firstly from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, the service is very welcoming and attentive. Meanwhile, the food more than holds its own. The tea is great, the sushi is fresh and very well made. Go here with confidence that you will be treated well and enjoy a delicious meal.

Dinner was AMAZING. It was my first time here and I had the Johnnie roll with some yellowtail sushi. Fish was fresh! Roll was made to perfection. Sushi was thick and wonderful! Chef even made me a side yama salad on the house! Salad was to die for! Absolutely returning!

Glad they've reopened since their fire last yr. Went with a friend who is a regular here at her fave sushi place. Friendly and great staff, I'm a newbie to sushi and they explain and help you choose . I love the Philly cream cheese roll, and the avocado salad. My friend gets Spicier items and loves it, esp the squid and sashimi tuna. Their brewed green tea they serve is excellent too. Very authentic place. Wish I had taken a pic of how nice the plates look!

Yama Sushi brought me tea while I waited and my to go order was ready quickly. Their lunch menu had wonderful prices too!

Recommended by Google as a restaurant to check out and am glad I did. This family establishment offers an array of traditional Japanese cuisine and I look forward to returning. The ambiance was casual with the simplicities of friendly service that made it feel home-like. I'll certainly be returning soon!
