I've been dying to try this place since the pandemic. Finally. Did it meet my expectations? Mostly. HIDDEN. Because the restaurant is located in the downstairs corner unit, its somewhat hidden. But I gave 4.5 stars for the nice modern Japanese decor and atmosphere. FOOD. Dinner omakase $130. Hmm, I thought the food was really good, but nothing that really shouted "Wow!" But for the Westside, it's about right. The pieces of fish were small, but at least the rice for the nigiri was still warm (nice.) But the competition for quality and value is tough out here in WestLA/Santa Monica. The omakase ended with a nice yuzu sorbet. Perfect ending. Sake: they sell a variety of sake by the glass or by a carafe (iced.) I trust they are serving me the right cold sake that I ordered. The serving size was smaller than I expected.

Lunch for 2: Got Delux Moriawase, Sunset Roll, and Soba Salad. Soba Salad was a bit small for the price but tasted amazing. Miso soup and salad (comes with Moriawase) were excellent. Sushi was great and Spicy Toro Hand Roll was good as well. Only thing we did not like was the Sunset Roll. Wasabi fraiche and smoke roe did not compliment the flavor of overpriced and ultimately just regular salmon roll with just two gimmicky ingredients. However, everything else was amazing. Tables are very close to each other and it was very loud (mainly due to the four business men next to us were really loud). Still one of the better sushi places in an area already crowded with great sushi restaurants. Certainly will revisit.

Usually a sushi restaurant concentrates on creating a culinary experience based on nigiri and sashimi at the expense of providing a variety of food options. Hamasaku is one of those rare exceptions where the sushi is extremely fresh and delicious while the menu offers everything from yellowtail Kama to shishito peppers and krispy rice. Hamasaku sits in a strip mall next to a Carvel's ice cream shop so if you don't like any of the deserts at Hamasaku (the Yuzu cheescake is worth ordering), you can grab a scoop next door.

Very nice high quality sushi place with a friendly bustling atmosphere, very home like yet elegant. Best dish by far was the avenue of stars roll. Every bite you take of that roll you can tell it’s really high quality. Ricky castle roll and September flower are also pretty good but I would say they are not worth the price. Black cod tastes really good and tender but is also not worth the price with the tiny quantity of fish you get. Yellowtail collar is cheaper but the fish texture is definitely worse than the black cod, with some areas of the meat being pretty tough. The wagyu roll is pretty good and very creative! Overall, a pretty creative and high quality sushi place.

The food is excellent and there is an obvious care and attention to the quality of the food. The toro is some of the best toro I ever had! The service was alright, nothing to write home about or make it a unique experience. There were a few times we had to aggressively flag down a waiter to order more or get more sake for the table. The atmosphere was by far the worst thing at this restaurant. It was incredibly loud inside, stuffed with people and we sat between a man ranting about his mistress and pending divorce and a woman watching TV shows loudly on her phone whose adult son was loudly watching things on his iPad. Overall gave it big cafeteria vibes, something that feels very strange at a restaurant that is this expensive and high quality otherwise.

The green tea was wonderful on a cold night and after a lull in service was asked if I needed more plenty of times. While I can understand a temporary delay in service, I have to give 4 stars due to the poor choice in chairs. My lower body went asleep and my back felt unsupported. I hate it when designers don’t sit in their own selections. We spent an hour and half here very comfortably otherwise. Ps. What really ticket me off was the food. Ordered peppers as a starter which were bland and uninteresting with a weird sauce. Let’s forget about that. The sushi arrived nicely presented, but that was it for the experience. The fish was not very tasty and the rice was slightly dry and bland. Overall very underwhelming. Hamasaku is great! I came here quite late at night. I thought about that one episode of Worth It, where Steven and Andrew came here. Parking was fair enough, as it was a strip mall. Unfortunately, it’s not very visible unless you look closely at the area, thus making it somewhat a hidden gem. As with all sushi joints in LA, everything is hella expensive! However, your money is well spent here. Their absolutely phenomenal omakase is only 85$ [And yes, I said only, because places like Kanpai are in the 3 digits zone, and I argue the stuff here is better.] The starting dish, snow crab salad was bomb! Nice and fresh; a good start to your meal. Sashimi is as fresh as ever, and it’s more like butter than fish! Delicious. Sushi is extremely tasty, and each nigiri piece is unique. Lastly, their cheesecake for dessert was very interesting, and made a satisfying wrap-up. The staff is very patient and the atmosphere is downtempo but not intimate, which is quite uncommon in a lot of restaurants. All in all, I really enjoyed my meal here. Eat the sushi with your hands, and the sashimi with your chopsticks! That makes it better??? [Or so I’ve heard] I will be back. Thank you Hamasaku!

Hamasaku is ensconced in a corner of an unassuming strip mall on Santa Monica Boulevard, but upon entering the charming restaurant space, it feels more like Tokyo than West L. A. We picked amongst favorite categories of dishes, to construct our preferred dinner, and with each course we got something far more complex and wonderful than anticipated. Spicy tuna over Crispy Rice offered contrasts of soft and crunchy, cold and warm— sublime. The warm tofu was served with sauces, seasonings, mushrooms, and fresh egg yolk— a delight. Grilled vegetables were presented like a perfectly charred salad, a very generous portion with intense, individual flavors. The Blondie roll combined our favorite crustaceans with favorite vegetables in a unique presentation. Same for the DJ Spider Roll, though with a few ingredient adjustments, the result was surprisingly different and also terrific. We could return numerous times, never having the same dishes, and be completely satisfied with each. The cozy dining room was quite lively, servers helpful, and tables were filled and refilled with appreciative patrons.

Hamasaku has the freshest fish of any sushi restaurant in NW LA. I've been to several sushi places near to this, and Hamasaku takes the cake, bar none. Every piece of nigiri tastes like it was caught this morning, and the rolls are second to none. The interior has a cool, modern vibe (that is modern as in the era, not meaning contemporary), and although the service has been a bit slow a couple times that I've been here, the food and amenities more than make up for it (they even bring you a warm hand towel, and they serve sake in a glass with an ice chamber to keep it cold). This is amongst my favorite restaurants to which I've ever been. If you're willing to drop a pretty penny, go to Hamasaku.

Excellent omakase experience! To begin with, I would like to call their sushi 'aroma sushi'. All the dishes come with some creative addition of novel tastes and scents. Sushi dish was served seven times in total and each dish came with two pieces. All tasted extremely fresh, tender, and juicy! Spain tuna, one of the seasonal fish pieces, even tasted chewy. Actually, I was a little disappointed at the first dish of sashimi because of too ordinary tuna (It's still better and more tender in taste). But shortly after it, I got totally amazed and entertained with the series of the following gorgeous sushi dishes. There was a mix of new tastes and familiar ones but with far more upgraded taste sensations. Overall, great pleasure and happy meal it was for sure! Also, the last dish (the traditional Japanese ice creams) was extremely enjoyable! Particularly, lychee ice cream was too surprising! I like lychee (a fruit) but I've never imagined it can turn into an ice cream before. Thumbs up! 향이 살아있는 스시. 독특한 면이 있어서 재미있음! 사시미 투나 한점 빼고 전부 미각을 상당히 자극함! 간장 맛이 너무 좋음.
