Favorite German food in Chicago! We loved the live music too.

We usually just get the schnitzel. It’s always good, well seasoned, with large portions. You can feed yourself twice with it

Everything was excellent and awesome live music!!!!

Posted hours are inaccurate and they randomly switch to buffet only. Used to have the best buccattina amatriciana in the area but hard to tell anymore as my last 4 attempts to get it have been stopped by earlier than advertised kitchen closures or unannounced buffet only days. Call first to check what they are serving that day if you don't want to waste all the time I have.

Great food, friends and fun! What a super place to relax and unwind! I highly recommend you try them! Great cover band called The Tuesdays as well..You wont be disappointed!!!

Very authentic and unique. Very few places like this left in Chicago. Draft beer list is fantastic. Schnitzels are unforgettably delicious. Their pizza is also very good if you're in mood for one. Live music is played frequently and people just have so much fun - dancing and enjoying themselves. Many regulars who are fun to talk to. This is absolutely a gem.

It looked interesting so we decided to pop in. No pizza, just a buffet. We had a beer and decided to leave. We were never offered another drink anyway. Upon paying our check, the Bartender was visibly angry that we didn’t eat at the buffet though we were not interested in eating. We also had no idea how much the buffet costs because nobody offered that information. Wurst customer service we’ve had in a long time. (see what I did there?) Very out of character for the area. There’s a level of creepiness here not easily achieved.

Himmel's is a great place. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable given the large portions. The live music is great and it is family friendly as well. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Went on Father's Day before the rush. Food was great & reasonably priced. The portions are huge. The pretzel bread is delicious 😋

Every part of my meal was so good!

The last time I had really good German food was when I was in Ohio. I have to say Himmel’s was spot on. The food was super fresh and well worth the wait. I will recommend the pizza rustica and the champignon rahm schnitzel! And the waiter we had recommended dishes and was very friendly to my friend and I! I will defiantly be coming back again. And on the weekend they have fresh pretzel bread for customers and live music!

Sweet restaurant with wonderful food and great service

Had dinner at the bar. Top notch service. The food was excellent. Very good German food.

Enjoyed the Sauerbraten was one of the best I have had and don't forget to have the hot apple strudel which had some of the best whipped cream I have ever had!

Best Chicken Schnitzel in Chicago!!

This place was recommended to us by German friends, I'm first generation German and grew up in that neighborhood. We went for Easter brunch which, given all the rave reviews for the regular menu, was hugely disappointing. Were told that the brunch would have representative items from the regular menu, which was NOT the case. Instead, some chicken schniztel slices (mine was OK but my wife's tasted off), ham that was nondescript and dry beef that was truly disappointing. Some of the sides were OK to solid, a bit heavy handed on the balsamic vinegar, no representation from the Italian side of the menu. A really small buffet selection so you can imagine my shock when I got the bill and it was $40/person! Definitely not anywhere near worth the price. I might try it again when I can order off the regular menu but if it reflects the buffet quality I would be disappointed once again.

Staff didn't seem happy to have us there...

An authentic European restaurant with great music

Smelled amazing when I was there - bright skylight over the bar, there were smoking sausages. Going to try it out next time for food. If they had any Weihenstephaner I’d be back even faster.

I had the chance to check out Himmel's while wandering around Chicago. This German restaurant is located in Lincoln Park, close to the famous Lake Shore trails and steps from the DePaul University campus. Himmel's transports you to a cozy Bavarian village amid the big city hustle and bustle. Stepping inside, I was greeted by the aromas of grilled sausages, sauerkraut and soft pretzels. The dark wood paneling and decorative plates on the walls added to the authentic vibe. We sat down and were promptly served heaping portions of classic German fare. I opted for the jägerschnitzel, a pork cutlet smothered in mushroom gravy. It was tender and flavorful, seriously satisfying my appetite on the windy Chicago evening. With every bite, I swore I heard a "Prost!" My dining companions raved about the spätzle and sausages. The friendly staff made us feel right at home. Our server was knowledgeable about all the Bavarian beer selections. I enjoyed a malty Doppelbock myself. After our fill of food and drink, it was time to explore more of Chicago. I'd recommend stopping by Himmel's if you want to warm up with some hearty German cuisine while taking in the vibe of Lincoln Park. Don't forget to try the apfelstrudel for dessert! I'll be back in this city again for sure.

This is a fantastic and reminds me a lot of Wisconsin German restaurants. Obatzda was a favorite.

Good food, fun place, with Max on accordian.

I love this place but I feel like it does not love me. Every time I go I have a weird interaction with the owners. Most recent being that I held the door for an older lady and was told by the owner to close the door and stop letting cold air in. I’m going to keep going but hopefully the owners can see from this review that they have been treating a regular customer weirdly. Aside from that this is a hidden gem. They sometimes have live music. Food tastes very fresh and nice portion size.

Everything here was excellent. The authentic German decor and atmosphere was great. Live music was perfect with the selection just loud enough but perfect for conversation. German food was excellent and large portions. The Wurst Platter had excellent kassler chop that was very tender, brat, spaetzle and sauerkraut superb. My husband had the Weiner Schnitzel which was as good as the best restaurants in Germany. My girlfriend had the Sauerbraten, which she loved and the red cabbage which was super. We highly recommend this restaurant.

The pizza we ordered is amazing!

Bland.disappointing. overpriced. I was very much looking forward to German food but was unimpressed with nearly every aspect of the meal. I ordered wiener schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle. The rye bread was very good in flavor and texture, but had too much coarse salt baked on top of the loaf.

So we came in at 3:08pm on a Saturday. Sat at the bar, someone took our beer order and we didn't see them again until 3:30. They didn't speak to us, we just saw them again. At 3:40pm, same person ask "how we were"? We paid and went up the block to eat. I assume you can't get food at the bar?

Birthday celebration for SIL. She loved it. The family had a great time. Music was such fun. Food was very good. Carol’s cheesecake was delectable. Had a wonderful time.

This place is amazing! The food, the German, family atmosphere, the accordion player, the food. Did I say food already? Can't say it enough. This is an absolutely fun place to spend 2 hours or the evening as a couple or a party. We had the Rahm Schnitzel and pork shank. Both were delicious.

One of the last true authentic German establishments in the city. Food, staff and atmosphere (including live polka!) are excellent.

The best of what Lincoln Square has to offer. The portions are huge and the food is so high quality and just delicious. It feels home made in the best way. The staff is wonderful, helpful, friendly and kind. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. I haven’t tried the pizza yet but it’s at the top of my list.

Food was okay. Service was fast. Didn’t appreciate hearing “She’s too fat for me” being sung by the live entertainment.

Was there on a Thursday evening. It's want crowded and the live band was so fun to watch.

If you're looking for a hidden gem in town, look no further than Himmel’s. This cozy spot is so good, I'm almost hesitant to share it with others so I can always snag a table. Not only do they have live music to set the perfect atmosphere, but the food is truly unparalleled. Their chicken parmigiana is a standout - with portions that are both generous and delicious. And let's not forget about their freshly made pretzel dough breads, which are a complimentary appetizer unlike anywhere else.

Fun. Delicious. Delightful. Polka lite!!!! They have a good beer selection. The German food is satisfying. Shank just melts in your mouth. The Sauerbraten was good. Their Red Cabbage, one of the better ones I have eaten. They used to be partnered up with an Italian concern and since parted ways, but they left the brick fired oven, some they put it to use. They make a good delicious. table snack. We were too busy eating so no pictures.

Great food and live music Thursdays and Fridays!!

This restaurant earns a perfect score in every single category. The food: absolutely perfect, right down to the last bite. The service: out of this world -- quite possibly the best we've ever had. And the ambiance: the name of the place says it all -- Himmel, or Heaven in English. My husband loved his Hühnerschnitzel, Rosti, and vegetables. My Wienerschnitzel and Deutscherkartoffelsalat were very good, but the Rotkraut stole the show. I finally found my mom's recipe in a restaurant: red cabbage, apples, cinnamon, and raisins, with a hint of bacon for flavoring. The best part were the talented musicians and the welcoming owners and staff. The lead guitarist was exceptionally talented, and his vocals provided the perfect ambiance for the occasion. We also enjoyed meeting Alex, Miss Lynn, Miss Carol, and Miss Diane. They really welcomed us like family. We've definitely found our new favorite restaurant.

Had 5 pm reservations. Inside of restaurant was dark and dingy. Needs an update and cleaning! The narrow hallway to the bathroom was cluttered with boxes. Took awhile before someone took our drink order. Asked for mai-tais, then waiter returned to say they don't make them. He suggested wine, which we ordered. He made 5 trips from the bar to serve the 4 of us our drinks. He first brought a glass of wine, then another, then one beer, then another beer (same kind) and finally, he brought "mai-tais" (don't know what they really were, but not good). BTW, the waiter was condescending and rude the entire time. We ordered all 4 of the appetizers on the menu. They were actually pretty tasty. Then the waiter seemed surprised that we wanted to order entrees. One in our party ordered a large bowl of soup, two of us had roasted young duckling and one had chicken schnitzel. Here we go... the soup was just okay, needed flavor. Asked for and was brought maggi seasoning. The duck was horrible. It was not done and too tough to cut. No duck sauce or gravy. Asked for some and the kitchen sent out a small cold bowl of mushroom gravy. The spaetzel that it came with was hard and dried out. The red cabbage salad was okay. The chicken schnitzel was HUGE and good. It came with a very large serving of mashed potatoes that were good too. An award winning German chef was in our party. Twice, he asked the waiter to request that the chef come to our table. The chef never came. (They were not busy, with the exception of about 15 people at the bar watching the Super Bowl and I think one of those WAS the chef. ) When we finally got the check, our waiter said " Did Carol come over and talk to you"?, knowing full well she didn't. He was very sparky. We did receive very good service from the busboy. He did a lot of the waiter's job. We will not be going back. Not a good experience

Our second time here and once again, food was delicious. I made reservations for my husbands birthday, and our waiter was nice enough to let the band know & they sang happy birthday for him. It's a great, family-friendly restaurant.

Wow, wow, and wow. Himmel's is a gem right off of the square. Fantastic food, amazing beer, awesome live music, and great service.

Loved the quality of the food and large portion sizes. Disliked the fact that the server wouldn't let our party see or offer to print out the itemized receipt. Instead, he showed his tablet of the total to only one in our party, leaving us scrambling to figure out who owed what; some had alcohol. Also, how much is the upcharge for a 7 oz. can of generic Shasta?? I'll never know, because I didn't see the receipt. Lastly, it's rude--and unsanitary--for the server to pick up my can to check if it's empty without my permission. Ask first. I'd go back but only for carryout.

This was an excellent restaurant and bar. Great service and food, just what we were looking for.

Authentic and delicious German food

Very homey feeling to the area. The food was very authentic and comforting. Very large portions so get ready to share!

Took a full hour and a half, and what we got was absolutely terrible. We paid over $100 and we got an inedible sauerbraten that tasted like it had been left in the back of the fridge for too long, "dumplings" that are clearly just reheated slices of mush in watery, flavorless gravy, and a porkshank that was completely unseasoned and contained congealed, gelatinous fat. The pizza was fine, but not up to the quality it once was, and frankly a waste of a D. O. C. certificate, and the cheese dip was bland and was so chunky it was unspreadable. This place used to be really good, but what we received was absolutely unacceptable for the price we paid.

Excellent traditional German food with a twist of traditional wood oven baked pizza! Highly recommended!!!

Had dinner at Himmel’s last week. The schnitzel was delicious, but the potatoes were too greasy. Salads were good, but the drinks are pricey. We really enjoyed the music and the dancing.

One of the last great German restaurants in Lincoln Square. This is a must-visit if you want any of the old German comfort foods. Prices are reasonable, the beer selection is expansive, and the environment is fun. Make a stop!

This is a unique idea. They are pairing the experiences and cuisine of both Italian and German food. While they are not usually parrot in the same dish it is a nice variety. They even have pizza, but it is on the wine menu, so don't forget to look for it. Prices are a bit high but portions are huge.

Best Schnitzel anywhere. A dish that's often given a pass because it's hard to do right. This isn't the heavy, greasy dish you might be thinking of. It's filling and satisfying but without regrets.

Been meaning to try to come here for awhile now, so glad we finally made the choice to come in. The food was above and beyond. Super kind staff and cozy atmosphere. Great German beer. And to top it all off, I highly recommend getting the cherry strudel for dessert. We will come back again to try the oven baked pizza and live music on the week days.

Really delicious! Exceeded or expectations

Went to Himmels to Celebrate My Sister whom is Down Syndrome and turned 64. There were 9 of us for dinner on a Sunday afternoon and there was also an Applefest going on in Lincoln Square so the neighborhood was bopping! I called ahead for reservations and asked for a wheelchair accessible table… which they gave us! The dinner was delicious and the service superb! So desert time came and I asked the Sweet Waitress if they had apple strudel to put a candle in for her Birthday and she said they were all out but would come up with something. We’ll they sure did! A delicious strawberry filled sheet cake was brought out by the waitresses and Owner and we all sang Happy Birthday… My sister was So excited she started to cry… happy tears! Thanks Himmels SO much for making it So Special for Our Angel! We will be back soon!

At first, kinda like , let's go. Stood at door waiting to get seated. Just one waiter. Sat down. Feels like an old world place or someones office. Boxes lined up by kitchen and kinda disorganized. Server sort of messy but fun and very nice. People were having fun! Felt like in another place other than Chicago. Fun accordion player. Food awesome. Good portions. Salmon toast excellent. Steak tartare huge. Schnitzel and yes, pizza were excellent! Will def be back.

Portions were HUGE and delicious. Server was incredibly friendly and professional and the atmosphere was really nice.

Really wanted some Bavarian Pork Shank like you get in Munich. Orderd them from Himmels and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the spaetzle as the side and it was excellent , although I really wanted to try the dumpling. Pork shank was well roasted, juicy and tender. All portions were very generous. The Wiener Schitzel was good and thought it was very generous in terms of portions. Great experience.

Super tasty dumpling medallions smothered in a perfectly prepared mushroom and chive cream sauce, so smooth in texture and deliciousness that you'll think you died and went to dumpling heaven! A MUST order if you visit!
