This is the BEST sushi restaurant currently in the area. There were some others that came close but they seem to have dropped in quality while Kanno has consistently been excellent. When I first heard about this place I was extremely skeptical as it is in a bit of a shady strip mall in Fat City and it doesn't look that good outside or inside but once you taste the food none of that matters. They have an awesome blue crab roll and amazing soft shell crab spicy miso soup! Elvis and his wife are the owners and work the sushi bar (and maybe you would guess there is a lot of Elvis artwork). They have reserved seating for their VIP customers that eat there like twice a day as it is that GOOD!!! You have to earn your spot in the reserved section so don't even try to sit in that area. Everything I've had here has been outstanding and if you're really good they give you a tasty little frozen chocolate treat for dessert. They are closed on Sunday & Monday and they take a long holiday back to Japan once a year so you might want to call to make sure they are open but they usually are and it is definitely worth a visit multiple times a week!!! Amazing food and service. Cindy was terrific. Loved everything we ate, especially the unagi and protein roll! Very reasonably priced too, especially given the quality. We will be back!

Today I finally had the chance to visit their store because they are only open four days a week! Oh my God! There are restaurants that are closed three days a week? This is my first time seeing it. Although this shop is a small shop, it gave me a lot of surprises. It felt like the authentic shops I visited in alleys in Japan. The waiters are very hospitable, will recommend daily special dishes, and will respond immediately if you need anything. Today we ordered 5A Wagyu sushi, Toro sushi, and Yuanbei sushi. They were all very fresh, especially the Wagyu sushi with the special sauce that melted in your mouth. It was so delicious! It's a pity that there are no sea urchins today. Overall, this can be said to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in New Orleans. I hope to visit again next time and taste the sea urchin to see if it is equally delicious!

Sashimi, 🍣 sushi rice, smoked salmon and crunchy rolls were super delicious. Plum wine is very good. Top notch service. Go early around 530pm and beat the crowd.

What a little gem.. the restaurant itself is very small, ideal for a solo lunch or date. I sat down and left within 30 minutes. The servers were very fast and attentive. The sushi is incredible. So fresh and so tasty. On the pricier side, but definitely well worth it! Will be back again!

Best sushi in the New Orleans metro area! Took my daughter (from out of state) here for dinner and we ordered appetizers, and several "half" plates of sushi that were all absolutely delicious! The wait staff is patient and helpful in describing the offerings. Even comes with these sinful little chocolate bites at the end of the meal...bonus!! It's a small place, only seats about 2 dozen folks but if you have to wait it's worth it!

100 percent the best sushi restaurant in the New Orleans Area!!! Plus those complimentary chocolates served at the end of the meal are heaven! These people really care about the sushi they make. Make sure you get there when they open because seats fill up fast!

Freshest fish of any Sushi place in the area. Great rolls but many are not listed on the menu. The place is small with parking issues so get there early if you want to park in their back lot.

Freshest sushi I've ever had!! My son recommended Kannu to my friend and me for sushi dinner. We shared several of the rolls (you can order half-rolls) and from the first bite everything was fresh and delicious. Service was fantastic too! I highly recommend Kannu if you are looking for a quick dinner in Metairie!

My wife and I had a great dinner tonight. The service was outstanding and they were very helpful with suggestions. Really loved the blue crab roll, Elvis roll and Ryan roll. Also, we had the toro sashimi and Kobe beef. Will be back!

A very warm welcome here as my friend eats here regularly....and food wise I can see why. Nice big glass of chilled water straight away and then happy and attentive service. The sushi was great in all the forms it came. The fresh wasabi is a must! Also had some of the teriaki action going on which was delicious. The kobe beef was well worth the bite too! This place is well worth a trip and has all the hallmarks of a well-run restaurant.

Best sushi in the New Orleans area, hands down. Very small establishment, so it’s almost always crowded, but worth it. Can’t bring baby strollers in. Fire hazard, too small. VERY good prices. Try the David Roll. Service gets overwhelmed and often forgets who ordered what. I got the wrong roll and ate it before I realized it wasn’t mine. But it was delicious and I was happy to pay for it

First time walking in and out wasn't packed. I love to sit at the sushi bar. The cure of meat on the sushi was nice and generous. The tuna Toro melts in your mouth. The rolls were amazing 10/10 the food here never disappoints. The staff is nice and always ready to help. The atmosphere is great the smaller the place the better the food.

Been with them since they were in Fat City. Best fresh Sushi , The rolls without rice are the biggest in town. Try the South Beach Roll & Protein Roll , so good & the Sashimi salad is the best. Let’s not forget those little Chocolates after dinner. Yum. Too bad they don’t do Uber Eats or Door Dash.

Absolutely will never ever eat here again… without coming in extra hungry because the food is that good.

I had miso soup (delicious) and the kanno special, which was with baked salmon. The baked part was a little unusual for a roll for me. Tried it, it was OK but had a different flavor.

The best sushi in the New Orleans area, hands down. Everything is delicious, fresh and very high quality. I feel like I’m back in Japan coming into this small but welcoming restaurant. The food comes up very quickly and after eating here a dozen time, I can confirm that you will not be disappointed. I typically order the nigiri and sashimi, but my family loves the various special rolls. The wait staff and management are all so friendly and helpful, so that makes it even better. They serve daily until they run out of fish, so sometimes they close earlier than the posted closing times. Note that reservations are no longer required.

Friends recommended Kanno so I gave it a try. Mistake! I ordered their recommended Spicy Tuna Roll (8 small pieces, $18, which was way over-priced). The rolls consisted of a blob of rice with a thick piece of fish on top, it didn’t look very appetizing. Worse, what I supposed was the tuna, it was just a mushy fish (?) paste with no flavor. It took a lot of wasabi and soy to make it even palatable. Some of the worst “sushi” I’ve ever had, and as noted, a ridiculous price for some rice and “fish paste”. I won’t be back.

Came here for lunch and had a great experience! The food is fresh and delicious and the service is great. It was very quick (we were in and out in about 30 minutes) for a lunch break. I had a Philly roll and the beef gyoza and both were so good. I will definitely be back for dinner!

Had the vegetable croissants as an app, 1 Kobe beef steak portion and deep fried shrimp roll. ALL of it was delicious! I live pretty far from this place and it was my first visit. It was worth the drive.

The sashimi was fresh, succulent, and perfect in texture and temperature. The dessert was clever and unexpected. Kanno is truly a gem of a restaurant in the Jefferson Parish/NOLA region. This legendary chef is incredibly talented and a master of his art. The staff is attentive and superb. Quite the experience, this is Japanese cuisine without having to fly to Japan.

The blue crab special roll, deluxe eel roll, salmon skin roll, protein roll and shrimp tempura roll are fire! Fabulous service and food!

We loved dining at Kanno. My daughter was a fan and brought me on the way back from Abita Springs. Try the John handroll, the sashimi, and blue crab roll. Great service and very welcoming staff.

I hate to brag on this tiny little gem in Metairie, (no I don't,) but it really is delicious! The staff are very attentive and efficient and "friendly"! The food never disappoints! Not your typical run of the mill sushi joint!! Reservations are necessary

Stop your search for the best sushi in the NOLA area. I know my search has ended. Kanno is the B-E-S-T I ever had (around NOLA). Other places here will be a hibachi/sushi spot, but Kanno focuses on sushi though they have other items on the menu. I had a craving for sashimi and happened to find this place. Our server gave a good spiel at the beginning that lasted about 5 minutes-- he really, really knows his stuff! Everything sounded delicious so it was hard to pick something. We got the sashimi appetizer to start, then added shumai, one of their specials for the day. The shumai were extremely soft. Then, I was looking around for inspiration and saw Elvis's painting on the wall, so we ordered the Elvis roll. The Elvis roll was so tasty and they had a lump of crab meat on the top of it-- so delicious and wholesome. The kush roll came next, which was one of the specials our guy mentioned. The interesting and delicious part about both rolls were that they did not include rice and were packed with about 5 different things. Ended with a pair of toro (fatty tuna) sushi. The toro was my favorite and a great way to end the meal. It was creamy and melted in my mouth. Everything we ordered was just enough and did not make us overly full. Everything had fresh and delicious tasted and worth every penny. At the end, they surprised us in the form of house-made chocolate. Another thing that is house-made is their wasabi-- it is completely fresh and looks like guacamole so be careful. This place has left an impact on me and I swear loyalty to this place when it comes to a sushi fix. This place definitely reminds me of the California sushi spots as they are so named. tips: They have parking lot in the back. Try Toro sushi.

Intimate space with top notch sushi!

Reservations only restaurant took me a little aback. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the quick service and delicious food. Fish for the sushi was fresh and delicious. We enjoyed the Elvis rolls, Kanno special rolls, and protein rolls. My sons enjoyed the chicken teriyaki dinner, which was a little sweet and slight spice taste that was different. Ended meal with complimentary chocolate ice cream cubes rolling in cocoa powder. Small and hidden gem in Fat City Metairie area. Parking is small lot in back or street.

Without question my favorite sushi place in the greater Nola area. So so fresh, small space but great knowledgeable staff who aren't afraid to make recommendations. The salads are unique and delicious... I'm currently over the moon with the albacore kimchi salad.. It's delicious. Sashimi deluxe is great value and variety of fish.. All buttery and melt in your mouth good. Kanno is one reason to go to Metry.

I recently moved to Metairie and have been trying out a few sushi places to see what my new spot should be. Kanno is definitely the winner. Excellent sushi at a very fair price. Hours and parking are a little weird, but definitely worth it. Also, they like you to make a reservation.

Fantastic experience. We recently moved to the area and have been starved for quality sushi. Everything was super fresh and prepared with great care and skill. We had the Chef Choice Special. It begins with just 3 dishes, but you can keep ordering up these scrumptious surprises for a full meal. We’ll do that next time.

They don't disappoint! Service and food are amazing! I was very impressed

I'm from out of town so maybe this is why I'm scoring so low. Ginger salad was only spinach leaves and I'm not too for sure if that was really even ginger dressing. We ordered 5 different rolls. Only 1 was enjoyable, so we tried to order the chicken teriyaki dinner only for it to not be teriyaki sauce. it tasted like ketchup on chicken served with a small bowl of white rice. All the reviews made it seem like a great place but I was greatly disappointed. Even when calling to make a reservation (which you need to do even though no one else was in the building beside workers) it must be a "timed" reservation. So pretty much tell them how long it's going to take you to order, eat, pay and get the hell out. I'm sorry but this was not worth it.

The place to go for creative dishes and high quality

Make a reservation!! We were lucky be ause we didn't and there was one table open. We watched a few people get turned away. The food was fresh, very fast and there are some great specials. The House smoked Salmon was unbelievable. Perfectly smoked with pickled onions and jalapeno slices on top. I had the Sunflower roll. It was different from the traditional rolls that are made with rice...plenty of fresh fish and topped with onions. The sauce is slightly citrus, but refreshing and Salty as well. The service is very good, staff are constantly moving through the tables and attending to the patrons. Highly recommend eating here.

This a really quaint little sushi shop. Before the pandemic it was super packed and the wait would be terrible. After the pandemic the restaurant has utilized a reservation system and it has become a much better experience for dine in. Currently they are offering takeout and you can pick up your order through this window. The fish is fresh as always. We tried one of their new rolls that had slices of yellowtail, salmon and tuna on top with this sauce but I forgot the name of it. It was really good. Fresh scallop sushi and the sashimi deluxe was really good too. Service is always friendly. Awesome place.

The best sushi lunch experience i have had in a while. I knew nothing about the place, and did not make a reservation. They were super accommodating and seated us at the sushi bar. House smoked salmon and veggie croquettes were the bookends of meal. I can't wait to make my first reservation.

This was my first time and I have to say I was impressed. Asked Elvis to fix whatever he thought was best and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed. Everything was fantastic, the place was exceptionally clean, and the staff was extremely friendly. Will definitely be back!

This is the best Sushi I've had in the New Orleans area. They have real Wasabi and a wide selection of fish. If you like authentic sushi, this is the place. But they also have a ton of creative rolls that look great and that people more interested in Americanized sushi would enjoy. The restaurant is small, so call to make reservations. And they keep traditional Japanese hours, so they are closed in the afternoon between lunch and dinner. It's amazing food. Definitely worth the trip to Metairie.
