This dining experience was excellent. Best dining experience I've ever had on Madeline Island or Bayfield. This restaurant has amazing pre-colonial indigenous inspired food - that means no dairy, folks (which is a huge plus in my book)! I would go so far as to say that this is the north shore/Lake Superior region's equivalent of Minneapolis' Owami. Extremely satisfied with the quality of food and service!

We had a wonderful experience in our first visit to Mijim. I enjoyed the duck breast, my wife had an amazing rabbit and our friend raved about his whitefish! We enjoyed this with an excellent French wine. Wish it was closer to home but we will definitely be back the next time we go to Madeline Island!

Here you can taste the delicious food that you can't usually eat in the city, such as rabbits, fresh white fish, etc. Although the price is a little expensive, considering that they only have a few months of business hours a year, these are reasonable. Business is very good at peak times, and the waiters will be too busy to send bills. You just need to put the money on the table. . The taste of the dish is very special and delicious, but the amount is a little small. If you want a three-layer hamburger for your stomach every time, I suggest you eat something before you go.

We were looking for a unique place to eat with good food. We were pleasantly surprised. The meals are intended to be served family style so you can try a variety of foods. We selected the Bison with mashed turnips and Lions Mane, Beets and Berries and for dessert a sweetbread made with squash and maple syrup topped with blueberries. The service was great! Thanks for making my birthday one to remember.

Really great food. It’s small plates though, so you’ll likely want to order everything. Great chance to try dishes you can’t get anywhere else. The buffalo and squash were outstanding. All Gluten free dairy free meals.

Food was delicious if money is no object then this place would be great just order the whole menu and you might have enough to eat for the family. I went there with my family, a total of 5 people, ordered 4-5 different things off the menu described as family plates and it could best be described as a tasting menu. The portions are extremely small especially for the prices. I get that all the food is local but for 42$ for ribs you'd expect more than a singular rib. For 38$ trout dish you'd expect more than a 2x3 inch piece of trout. No a/c in the place either no fans not many windows so it was a sweltering 85-90 degrees inside with 80% humidity. At those prices a window unit wouldnt seem that far out of reach. We would have been willing to spend time and order more if it wouldn't have been so unbearably hot inside.

Terribly rude workers. Talked about us behind our back because half of my party only got water/rootbeer. Rude staff slammed our plates on the table and rolled her eyes at our party too many people times to count. Very awkward unlike maddlin island and its people

We had an amazing experience at Miijim! The food was delicious and there were flavors we had never tried before. We especially loved the beet dish, grits, and dessert. Service was excellent and everyone was very kind. Great spot for vegetarians, lots of vegetable forward dishes. This is a must-try if you are on Madeline Island, we will definitely be back!

Miijim is easily the most exciting dining experience I've had in years. I had the beets and heart berries dish, a stuffed pepper dish, and a grit based dish. The flavors explode off the plate. 10/10 would recommend!

Mushroom wild rice bowl was wonderful... with meaty chunks of blue oyster and chanterelle mushrooms. Satisfying, unique and flavorful. The meaty chewiness of the mushrooms (they were so large they needed to be cut) made for a healthy authentic meat alternative. Paired with a Keweenaw black ale...perfect! Highly recommend!!

Food was kind of boring and not particularly tasty. Veggies too salty and half the things on the menu were not available. Portions small and a bit expensive.

Delicious! Even better than Owamni (the hot ticket in Mpls). Really cozy spot, nice people, flavorful seasonal food, and welcomed way to celebrate Ojibwe culture. Favorite was the venison.

Small plates were really incredible and my body felt so good during and after eating. After trying both meat and vegetable dishes, all of which were delicious, I have to say Miijim's mushroom dishes are a must have. Don't forget dessert.

I ate at the Owamni in Minneapolis and it was an awesome experience but lacked flavor. This place Miijim had the same exciting concept but with great flavor and well seasoned dishes that popped. Interesting ingredients like Bison Heart kept the experience unique. But good seasoning and excellent flavor knowledge of sweat and savory made every dish taste great! The use of a blue berry sauce was on several dishes gave excellent sweat accents. I won't lie I had worry and doubt but overall was extremely impressed. The Owamni made me feel guilt for wanting that salt or just seasoning to make food pop. Here at Miijim things like the blueberry sauce worked very well to be amazing and still naturally occurring regionally. The use of salt might not be pure authentic but paying for high end dining it has to taste good and everything had great flavor and seasoning. I def want to make some comment but hopefully not offend about this being Ojibwe and Owamni being Souix... maybe it's the advantage of having trade with the French!

We visit Madeline Island every summer, and we were so excited for this new restaurant this year. Everything was delicious. The food was very different than what we are used to, but it was so fun to try new things. We went out on a limb with everything we ordered, and we were not disappointed. Can't wait for next summer!

We really enjoyed all the food we tried (about half the menu). Giving the atmosphere 4/5 because we sat on the patio and I’d say it’s a standard patio. Though they played music that I personally enjoyed very much. Inside looked very nice, and when we come back, I’ll be getting a reservation. Had excellent interactions with several staff members. Can’t wait to return!

Had the duck confit hash, 100 % excellent.... try the deserts too, you will love it here. Small portions, and it's not cheap, but it's worth it for the quality and location. Will sooooo 100% be returning.

I had a lovely dining experience last night!! I made a reservation for the four of us two days before without issue, and definitely recommend that over a walk in. We ended up trying the entire menu, minus the rabbit due to its popularity that evening. Highlights for us were probably the venison loin, manoomin hash, and the hominy, but really our entire meal was amazing and unique. Our server gave us a great explanation of the menu and was attentive and sweet throughout the service. I highly recommend giving Miijim a visit next time you find yourself island bound :))

Beautiful place and we were looking for a unique experience while on the island. The hostess was friendly and accommodating. Our server was not. Our group tried numerous dishes only one was cooked right. My rabbit was almost raw. The elk was over cooked and tough. The bison was good. Seasoning was very bland in all. Beautiful plates and maybe it was an off night. And no fry bread! A staple in the Ojibwe culture. That would be a huge added bonus to the experience for those that have never experienced Ojibwe food before. It also would help to justify the price of the meals.

Ate dinner at Miijim while visiting Madeline Island. They use traditional ingredients same as the indigenous people of the area used to. I had elk stew, my wife had the duck breast and we shared the smashed potatoes. All were excellent with so much flavor! The staff was very pleasant and knowledgeable about what they were serving and willing to get answers to our questions when they didn’t know. They take reservations but do allow some walk ins. If you’re on the island for a weekend check it out!

Every so often i have a meal that i just can’t stop thinking about–this was one of those experiences. Each of our five plates we got were unique, thoughtful, and delicious, unlike anything i’ve had outside of the cities. It’s incredibly refreshing see a restaurant in a small town that takes risks and serves food from an under-appreciated cuisine that is creative both in flavors and presentation. This coupled with the significance of a native restaurant on the island and the history of the area makes Miijim truly an incredible experience. Go in with an empty stomach and an open mind and enjoy. The braised rabbit and manoomin hash are a great place to start.
