We went to France on vacation earlier this summer, and did a lot of food shopping and cooking while we were there. Entering Marcel’s was a lot like visiting a French market! The selection of cheeses is spectacular! And they have many other staples. Irresistible kitchen gadgets, too, and even the drinking glasses we had admired at our French air B&B! We capped the visit with desserts at their restaurant, which were delicious, as expected.

Our last experiences were awful from the server and hostess. There is no reason to provide unequal service to different minorities when he is one too. The hostess seem to be full of herself based on her MEAN AND UNWELCOMING greet. Wow! The owner & management may consider re- training their staff to be professional and welcoming? Our lunch was average or below average. Our dishes were beyond salty. This was more than a week intake of sodium. The mussels were frozen for too long, hence the rubbery texture and flavor of fresh mussels were absent. The server got my pasta order wrong when I told him clearly from the beginning. Believe me, he had absolutely no reasons to provide us with below average service. He just wanted to push the most EXPENSIVE pasta dish. WHAT A WASTE OF FOOD. This is not your local place to enjoy french cuisine based on my experience with my family. There are many choices in Los Angeles for a French Bistro experience.

I was made to feel pretty unwelcome here. I’ve been shopping in the market for a while and always had a good experience but left the restaurant feeling pretty defeated. Been coming here for decades and have lived next door for the last 9 years, both the market and restauraunt. I could go on about the food and the selection in the market, and I will. But what really makes this place is the people. The staff is always so warm, professional and on point. I've never dined or shopped here and been disappointed. The staple items such as the beef bourguignon and escargot are flawless, as are their frequent specials like the whole branzino and the calamari Provencal. Two of my favorites. The nicois salad, available with seared ahi or chunk white, is always fresh and simple, as it is meant to be. I buy the anchovies for use at home. The seafood tier is always fresh and delicious. The cheese counter is my favorite in the city, and the staff knows their products. I describe the flavor and usually avoid cow milk fue to lactose intolerance, and their cow alternstive cheese never disappoints. An anchor tennant of The Farmers Market, this place brings the authenticity of Paris to LA in a sexy little alfresco sit down package. The gourmet market is always fun as well, for staple items, the divine cheese counter I described above, the adjacent fish market (and fish counter!), unique delicacies and liquors, and of course, the amazing to order sandwiches and home made deserts, including an intense selection of French macaroons. Highly recommend.

Great store, but maybe don’t ask people to wait an hour for a large party and then do absolutely nothing to prep seating for all of that time. Not only are we hungry, but have been told to wait another 39 minutes. Next time tell the large party they can’t be seated so they don’t end up both hungry AND angry. The party and I watched as multiple opportunities presented themselves to address seating but turnover appears to have been more valuable. I hope those turnovers were worth it

It had been well over a decade since my last visit to Monsieur Marcel. During a trip to the Petersen Automotive Museum with a friend from Düsseldorf, he mentioned a quick stroll to The Original Farmers Market. I shared that I used to be a frequent visitor and had a liking for a little French bistro in the market, but cautioned him that it had been quite a while since I last set foot at Monsieur Marcel. Given his strong affinity for French culture and cuisine as a Francophile, I couldn't help but feel a bit hesitant, especially considering his impeccable recommendations for hidden gems in Paris that I had come to adore. Our culinary journey at Monsieur Marcel began with the classic Soupe à l'Oignon Gratinee, featuring a rich layer of gooey Gruyère. As a European, my friend requested more bread and relished in savoring the melted cheese on a fresh baguette. Opting for the Boeuf Bourguignon, he expressed satisfaction, while I reminisced about my younger years in New York and chose the Steak Frites, reminiscent of a French bistro across the street from my former office. His enjoyment of both his selection and my positive memories of the onion soup and the flavorful steak with its accompanying au poivre affirmed Monsieur Marcel's status as a good, laid-back French bistro in the heart of LA. Despite a slight critique of the cut of meat, I find myself quite happy to rediscover this gem and plan to make it a point to frequent it more often, especially when the craving for simple French cuisine strikes.

Discovered this restaurant whilst visiting the Original Farmers Market and thought we would perfect to eat there for dinner. It has a fun relaxed vibe about it as you are sitting in the markets itself. We had the chicken liver mousse which was nice and the grilled octopus with beans. This should have been called beans with octopus as it was predominantly just beans. For mains we had steak and fries which has enough fries to feed two people so enough to share and the wild Mexican shrimp which is literally just peeled prawns. We love our French restaurants and this honestly was just average, I wish we had tried another restaurant in the markets.
