Our first time coming here but not our last! We had an amazing time, food was delicious.

Hefty price tag for mediocre food. I could tell that the steamed pork dumplings (XLB) were extremely overcooked from the super mushy and unpleasantly thick wrappers. The filling was flavorless and the accompanying sauce was way too sour. You're better off buying frozen XLB from Trader Joe's. Lobster and chicken dumplings with black truffle were acceptable but the wrappers, although not overcooked, were still too thick. Traditional peking duck was also a let down: the pancakes were basically thinner tortillas with papery mouthfeel and the duck tasted unseasoned. Update: I have reached out to the restaurant's assistant manager as per their request and received no response.

I have dined at Shanghai Terrace on many occasions. Last night the food was at best equal to any Chinatown restaurant: guaranteed to get you sick by the time you arrive home. I'm leaving this feedback so perhaps the management realize their poor food quality and pay more attention, and bring their standards to the level that was still intact a few months ago.

The last time, I went to the Shanghai Terrace is 4 Years ago. Today I had Dinner with my son. The Dumplings have changed: 4 Years ago there were cooked as yeast dumplings, which I loved, but now it is a kind of a noodle dough. Still good, but not outstanding. My son had the crispy beef tenderloin. 5 chunks in the size of a golfball, very leathery and impossible to eat with chopsticks. The dessert was very good. So what went wrong to end up with a 3 Star rating? The Dumplings are as good as you can eat them at the most Chinese restaurants. The meat should be sliced in small chunks. The overall rating is a okay -3 stars- but I expected much more especially when you look at the bill. Normally I don’t care, the paramount issue is the food, but today I felt, that I made a mistake to reserve there, which hurts, because I still have the memories of the dinner 4 Years ago.

What a delicacy of an experience. Went with a local friend. The food here is some of the best, and the service is all-around friendly professionals working as a true team. We asked the chef to send different foods and to include Duck (perfect duck). We need to come back when the weather permits terrace dining. Simply delightful!

We came here again during our second stay at the Peninsula. Wanted to mention the excellent service we received from Max at the Shanghai Terrace. _________________________________ This restaurant exceeded our expectations. Simply outstanding in everything.

Of course, Shanghai Terrace has gotta be top notch as it's part of the Peninsula Group right? I gotta say though this go round, top notch feels like an understatement. Been here several times before and have been wanting to go again several times in the past year and a half but kept having to cancel our reservations till one day we didn't. The service aspect was exceptional. I've never had any problems with service here but this time, they made what has already been fantastic service into exceptional. See, in the past while the service has always been top notch, there has always been this very slight robotic character to it; not this time. This time, their service did not feel robotic at all. They were very engaged, made fantastic recommendations and took care of us really well. The food I mean; there's nothing not to like about it. We had some vegetable dumplings which were simply out of this world. We had a salad which was terrific. We ordered the happy rice (God I need to find out which region of China that comes from and get a recipe. It is GOOOOOOOD) and the noodles with all the meats which too was just amazing. The only thing that was not on mark was the crispy tofu. The first round that came was a little undercooked so we had to send it back. While the second time was cooked right, the outer layer seemed very different than what they have done in the past. The seasoning was a bit off and the outer layer was just thicker and crispier. Other than that though, this place rocks.

Service was exceptional and expectations were exceeded in all areas including drinks, appetizers, dinner, coffee and dessert.

The best Chinese food in the city. Classy, quiet, and very comforting. Great service, and outstanding food. Recommend the shrimp and the Peking duck. All dishes can be accommodated to your taste, just inform your server.

Where do you go when you want to eat Chinese food while shopping? Perhaps because it is located at the Peninsula Hotel, the service is the best. When the weather is nice, it's nice to sit on the terrace and hang out. The taste is not bad. The advantage is that you can eat half-sized Peking duck. A potion perfect for two people to share. Dim sum is... Honestly, there are probably a lot of places with better food at lower prices, but there aren't any nearby 😂

New Year's Eve is not the same without dinner at Shanghai Terrace and they did not disappoint. While the restaurant was fully booked, we were waitlisted and thanks to Madison for fitting us in! There was a special chef's tasting menu for the holiday but it was a bit much, however the team allowed us to order from it a la carte - a special dim sum trio (lobster sew mai, etc.) and a steamed sea bass were wonderful, hopefully they will find a way to the regular menu. Thanks for a wonderful evening, happy new year!

Had a very enjoyable evening. Classy environment with a lovely but private feel. Staff was more than attentive and is more than happy to walk you through the menu. Everyone is very personable and professional, food and dessert are impressive!

As a fellow Asian, I cannot approve these dishes. Save yourself $350 and go upstairs to zbar. Also, don’t try to steal the cute chopstick holders… it won’t work :(

First time at the restaurant. We are ordered the tasting menu and were not disappointed. Everything was absolutely perfect, service was spot on and the timing of each course was perfectly spaced. Highly highly recommend.

We ate in the lobby overlooking the skating rink. Food was great as always. Love the duck with XO Sauce and the golden shrimp. Nice wine selection, a little bit pricey but generous pours. Service very attentive, but not overly so. One of our favorites for a relaxing evening dinner

We did hear about Shanghai Terrace and it lived up to the good reputation. Beatiful setting and great service. The highlight is the quality of the food, you will not get better even in Shanghai. Also, try the cocktails, they are surprisingly sophisticated.

Firstly, Shanghai Terrace is amazingly popular so last minute reservation changes are difficult. But the team was able to accommodate us at an earlier time, so many thanks! This was also a belated milestone birthday dinner and the team was so kind to provide my friend with a torte cake slice at dessert ... thank you so much! Dinner and drinks were favorites mentioned in our previous reviews, they were just as amazing as always.

Shrimp rolls were literally just shrimp in a crunchy dumpling. Nothing interesting, definitely not worth $17 Peking duck was a disappointment. For $60 it should be exceptional. Parts were dry, not very warm. Sago dessert tasted great but it wasn't plated very beautifully. Ambience and wait staff were nice.

I was very excited to bring my wife here for her birthday. Unfortunately, we were seated in the hotel lobby instead of the restaurant which very much disappointed my wife. The hostess tersely told us the restaurant itself was full and our reservation was for the lobby/restaurant (a nuisance lost upon me when I booked the table last month). 50 minutes later, we decided to cut our losses and eat elsewhere since no one apparently was available to take our food order. The whole experience was a disaster - especially considering how much we had looked forward to the experience for two weeks prior. I can’t recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I came to eat here while visiting Chicago recently and was extremely impressed with not only the quality of food but also the excellent customer service from Jade, Max, and Pipat. We were blown away by the dim sum, peking duck, and egg plant. When we decided we couldn’t have another delicious bite because we were so full, our incredible waiters insisted that we share some wine and have some sorbet. We were not disappointed. If you’re visiting the Chicago area and are craving Chinese, look no further- this is the place you want to enjoy a dinner at!! Thank you for your impeccable hospitality.

We ate an unbelievably delicious meal at Shanghai Terrace last night, one which we are still thinking about because we enjoyed it so much. Everything we ordered was fantastic. The highlight of our meal would be the main dish - Spicy Sweet Chili Prawn- which was the best shrimp dish we have had in a Chinese/Asian restaurant across the world ( including Shanghai & Hong Kong ). The taste, texture and size of the shrimp was exceptional. The yummy sweet And spicy chili sauce that the shrimps sat on top of in this dish was not overwhelming and tasted great on rice. These shrimps ( and sauce) were the stars of the meal. The string beans were great as was the Shanghai noodles. The single order of won ton soup was very large with many won tons, also delicious. We did see one appetizer being brought to another table that looked fantastic, so much so that we would have ordered it after the fact if we weren’t so stuffed. Looking at the menus appetizers, I believe this shrimp dish was the Golden Shrimp ( on menu it says: cucumber, walnuts, mustard mayonnaise but we couldn’t see this) although to us, it looked like a number of large shrimp served in a line that possibly were cooked with a light coating of some of these items. Whatever it was it looked like an amazing appetizer and the people eating it were really enjoying their choice. The service is top notch and the servers do everything in this restaurant to make the customer happy. We were not distracted by any noise whatsoever and the ambiance was nice. Normally we don’t order dessert in a Chinese restaurant but the chocolate ganache cake came highly recommended so my husband and I ordered a piece to share. It did not disappoint. It was a mixture of a dense chocolate cake with soft ganache. This cake along with our coffees was a perfect ending to a perfect meal. We cannot wait to go back!

A simply outstanding experience! Our server was so friendly and knowledgeable. He gave many suggestions and explanations on the menu. Everything we ordered was delicious. They also had a great selection of wine and cocktails. We would go back again without hesitation!

We are looking for fine Chinese food so we chose here. The service and atmosphere was great. But the food did not live up to the expectations. First, soup dumplings did not present well and tasted mediocre. The Peking duck was too lean, and the skin was not very crispy. The sea scallop did not mix well with the truffle, more like two different things held on the same plate.

A very good place to be and enjoy nice atmosphere, feel you are welcomed and cared about. We really enjoyed our meal and being together with Paula and Max! Next time in Chicago, we certainly visit Snanghai Terrace again!

Great Experience. The food was delicious and the service was awesome. We tried some Dim Sum, Kung Pao Chicken, Prawns in sweet chilli sauce and the fried rice and everything tasted great. The menu choice is a bit limited.The entire staff is very friendly and always there to assist. They have a very good wine list too. The ambiance is very nice. Since it was raining the outdoor (terrace) area was limited but the indoor space also has a very nice vibe. Reservations are a must at this place. I highly recommend this place.

Food was delicious. A little pricey but tasty. We had fried rice, king pao chicken, beef tenderloin, pot stickers, green beans, and soup dumplings. Do not skip the soup dumplings. All were good, beef tenderloin was just ok to me but I’m not a huge beef person. Service was AMAZING! Staff was so kind and accommodating! Would def recommend!

I was impressed by the attention to the details. There were 4 of us, but the dish that we ordered had 3 pieces of dumpling, so once the waiter noticed it, they bring additional piece. Food is great, atmosphere is great, crevice is great = highly recommend!

Great service from both the Peninsula Hotel staff (we were not staying there) and the restaurant staff. The patio seating and atmosphere was perfect. Food and cocktails were really good. Had three different dumplings from the Dim Sum menu and the Peking Duck. Our server made great recommendations and answered all of our questions. We weren't sure what to expect from a restaurant attached to a chain hotel (albeit a luxury chain), but it was a really nice experience overall.

Sorry but expecting better. It was ok but food was mediocre unfortunately.

Had dinner there last night and need to say it was very disappointing. 500.00 for a party of 4 eating cold dim sum that tasted pre-packaged. The website shows a beautifully illuminated outdoor terrace that drew me to make a reservation. Online impossible to get a table so I called and requested an outdoor table and the gal on the phone said if we got there by 8, they should be able to squeeze us in. Upon arrival we were seated outside amongst 3 other occupied tables with more than a dozen empty tables with all umbrellas down with zero lighting for ambiance so it was pitch dark on the patio. Overpriced with cold, less than mediocre food on a dreary, dark and empty patio. Very disappointing for a 5 star hotel. Would not recommend.
