Absolutely incredible food! My wife and I came here for a date night and we’ll definitely be back. One of the best burgers in the Austin area and the burrata and crab cake appetizers were the best I’ve ever had. Great service and atmosphere too. Really superb!

I love this place so much I almost hate to review it. This place is so Austin. It’s family owned and you can just feel the love that goes into it daily. Best hidden gem restaurant. Perfectly cozy rooms, pool and grounds. 10/10

I had the best experience at The Wayback Austin. Everyone there was so incredibly kind and helpful and attentive to every detail we needed. The location and cottages were more beautiful than I even imagined and felt so secluded and a perfect getaway spot for couples or girlfriends or even just a solo trip! I can't wait to go back again! I got to host a photography retreat there at the Wayback and Vicky & Sydney were so accommodating to everything we needed and made it an incredibly fun experience for the entire group! The restaurant is also AMAZING! A place you definitely want to put on your bucket list.

This is one of my few gems in the area that no one I’ve ever talked to knows about. I’ve yet to get a room here, so this is purely for the restaurant. I highly recommend breakfast here! Great coffee, good food, good staff…and a nice little sleepy outdoor environment. You’d never know that you’re right off a freeway. I live fairly far from Wayback but make a 30 min drive just to return to my peaceful nostalgic place.

We recently stayed at The Wayback for the weekend and hosted a brunch at the cafe. Everything went great! Sydney & Jill were helpful with every request. The cottages are so relaxing and serene. The landscaping and grounds are beautiful and the hill country views were great. This spot was perfect for our group as we spent some time in Austin and some time in the hill country. It was perfectly in the middle of everything we needed. The food was delicious and we had multiple meals at the cafe. We cannot wait to come back again!

The Wayback hosted us and our family for our wedding weekend and it could not have been any better — we keep remarking that it was actually even better than we had imagined it might be! The entire experience was completely comfortable, seamless, and dreamy, including the months of planning we did beforehand. Texan hospitality is on full display at the Wayback and we were full beneficiaries of the welcoming, fun, atmosphere. Sydney and Vicki have created something truly special at the Wayback and we are so grateful to them and their whole team for making our wedding so magical! We highly, highly, highly recommend the Wayback to all couples looking for a special, intimately-scaled wedding in Austin.

We had an amazing time here. The cottages were just as advertised; clean, cozy and comfortable. We had breakfast and dinner at the cafe and they were wonderful. The cafe has great ambiance and the food was incredible. We had dinner outside and it was amazing. The staff is great. The only word of caution is that if you plan to eat at the cafe, be sure to check the days/hours of operation.

Stayed for two nights. Beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable cottages on a serene property. Wonderful place to unplug and get away from it all. It was conveniently located to grab food at close-by restaurants. The shower/tub combo in cottage 2 has amazing water pressure and the tub is large enough for a nice soak. All of the linens are excellent quality. The towels were plush and super absorbent; the sheets and bedding were super soft and cozy. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The air conditioning worked very well and kept us cool in the Texas heat. There was a small salt water pool that we didn’t have time to enjoy, but looked lovely. Only negative for us was there was no way to heat water (no microwave), or options for a tea drinker. Had a Keurig with coffee pods available (sugar but no cream). Solved my dilemma with a quick stop at the local HEB for cheap electric kettle. Not a big deal at all. The place is so thoughtfully appointed and this would only have added to our wonderful stay. Only mentioning it to allow for future travelers to make plans.

My review is specifically for the cafe. I really wanted to love this place but the service and "specials" are very inconsistent and they do not honor what is on their website. The first time I went here was a couple of years ago for drinks and dinner and it was amazing and I had a couple of good experiences after that. I moved to the neighborhood and saw they had a burger and wine special last year and when I arrived, the waiter told me, "we are way too expensive for happy hour, we don't do that anymore..but I will honor the wine happy hour". He didn't and after he charged my card told me the next time I come in a glass would be on him. Fast forward 8 months later, I decided to give it another try for a wine happy hour that is listed on their website and dinner, but when I sat down was again told that is incorrect and they need to update their website. We didn't stay this time. It feels like a bait and switch. Unfortunately most people that live in the area feel the same way about this place. It is a shame- the ambiance is nice and the food is usually good, but many locals seeem to leave with a bad experience. I think the message is simple - honor what is on your website and train your employees to do the same with professionalism.

We just stayed at The Wayback this last weekend. We have family in Hill Country and wanted to be nearby while still having close proximity to Austin's downtown area. We will absolutely stay at The Wayback for all future visits. We stayed in cottage #7. The cottage was pristine, the walk-in shower was large and there were plenty of towels and washcloths. We loved the ambience and coziness of the cottage as well as the staff's wonderful service. We didn't have a chance to eat at the cafe but we took a breakfast sandwich to go and some coffee and they were wonderful. The grounds are beautiful and well manicured and the overall feeling of the property is really beautiful. We were only 10-15 min from the main part of Austin and also within 10-15 min of wineries, breweries, great restaurants and beautiful drives.

What a great find! We enjoy boutique hotels, and this one rates right up there. The mother-daughter owners have designed and built a number of cute, crisp, clean cabana/cabins in a serene setting on Bee Cave. It is surprisingly quiet and the beds are luxurious. There's a nice pool and a cafe/restaurant with limited hours. It's a popular place for a wedding venue, as well.

The Wayback Cafe and Cottages will always hold a special place in our hearts. I stumbled upon this little boutique hotel nestled in the Austin Hill Country when looking for a non-traditional location for our upcoming wedding, and immediately fell in love with the charming and intimate setting. It was the perfect place to host a romantic wedding weekend with our closest friends and family. We rented out the grounds for the weekend, our wedding party filling up all eight on-site cottages, for a getaway we’ll never forget. Not to mention the owners & staff! Sydney is sincere, responsive, flexible, and all-around incredible to work with. As a “destination bride” she was a huge resource and guide, connecting me to an amazing local planner and nearby churches for our ceremony. Sydney, Matthew, and Chef went above and beyond curating a cocktail and dinner menu that showcased our tastes and my husband’s Columbian heritage, even crafting a custom affogato dessert that I’m still dreaming of to this day. Little touches like a welcome note and bouquet in our cottage wishing us a lovely wedding weekend and umbrellas outside our rooms should rain come our way, did not go unnoticed, and had us feeling like family by the end of our stay. We will forever be grateful for the Wayback team for ensuring we have the very best day!

I haven’t had the opportunity to stay in one of the Wayback cabins mainly because I live just minutes away. I might if they allowed doggies 😊Although, I look for every opportunity otherwise. I’ve just recently taken a watercolor class and it made the start of the holiday season truly enjoyable. The Wayback is a tucked away treasure you won’t want to miss.

The Wayback is a beautiful boutique hotel! As an event planner who specializes in marriage proposals, it’s difficult to find a venue like The Wayback so close to downtown Austin! My company, Amore Austin, utilizes The Wayback’s well-manicured back lawn for proposals. We love this space because it’s intimate and offers breathtaking views of the hill country. First time coming here and we will definitely be back. We are new to the area and always looking for a good dining place. We came across this restaurant on Yelp and decided to walk in. It was a Sunday morning/afternoon and we did not have a reservation but they had open seating at the bar. Our drink orders were taken immediately. To start off, we had the "Morning Bun", a cinnamon roll with roasted pecans on the side. The cinnamon bun was warm and freshly baked. Quite delicious especially with the pecans. Highly recommend and it's enough for two, really even for three people if you just want something sweet to start with. I had the Omelet and my friend had the Avocado Toast. The omelet came with spinach, bacon, goat cheese, and potatoes on the side. I ordered mine without bacon and added a side of sourdough toast. I have to say this was one of the BEST breakfasts I have ever had! The omelet was hot and fresh and the ingredients were amazing. And since I have been in Austin, I have not been able to find good sourdough bread but this was the best sourdough bread I have had since moving here. The ambiance is quite nice inside but they also have outdoor patio seating. We opted to set indoors at the bar, but given the size, it can get quite loud and I would likely go for outdoor seating next time. The service was okay; I did read other reviews about the service and while we didn't have a problem getting service, we were sitting right at the bar. But I did see customers leave their tables just to come up and ask for something they had ordered but hadn't received. I like iced tea and they brew their fresh. But I was given my tea in a small tumbler, like something you would make an old fashioned in. They have large "beer can" style glasses and my friend received her cold coffee in the bigger glass. I went through the tiny glass of iced tea almost as soon as the server brought it out. She never offered to refill and I had to ask for more. Why wouldn't you serve iced tea in a normal sized glass like any other dining establishment? I asked if they could make my omelet with egg whites and was told "no". No egg whites? I have been cooking for more than 40 years and even cooked in a few nice restaurants. It takes only SECONDS to separate yolk from the whites. If your cooks don't know how, I'm happy to come by and show them. I have never heard of such a thing. You can't possibly be so busy that you can't take the 10 extra seconds it takes - and honestly, it really only takes about 5 seconds. And I was told no "special requests". I just wanted to add mushrooms to the omelet. Sad that I can't add something simple like mushrooms and you can't do egg whites. Last, we had no idea that reservations were needed. We were offered immediate seating at the bar or outside; we opted for the bar. However, when we arrived, all tables but one were empty. When we inquired about this, we were told the tables were all reserved for people coming in soon. We dined for quite a long time, and when we left, two of the tables were still empty. Sitting at the bar is very comfortable, but it would have been nice if we could have had one of the tables that remained empty the entire time we were there. But again, amazing food and we are looking forward to a return visit to try lunch and dinner and I highly recommend for breakfast.

The Good AND the Bad: The Good: 8 little cottages on a countryside property with good furnishing inside and plenty of places to sit under the trees. Good furnishings, comfy beds, a well-appointed bathroom. Strangely, though, some rooms have better furnishings or better outdoor areas than others. There is a restaurant on the same site and we had an excellent breakfast there. The Bad: The place closes down on Monday and Tuesday. One is meant to get housekeeping only after 3 nights -- our fourth day was on a Monday so it took special pleading with the owner to get clean towels, etc. The restaurant does not open till 9 even on the days it is open, so it is not much use for those who want an "everyday" breakfast. Finally, there is "nothing" in walking distance, but plenty in driving distance, so don't book there unless you have a car. Summary: $800 a night for a 2-bedroom "AirBnB" (but touted as an Inn) without a kitchen.
